I hum in agreement, and I’ve got my eyes closed. I’m warm with Sean wrapped around me and honestly, I could probably fall asleep in this very spot.

“Vic? Come on. Let’s get you in the car.”

“Hmm... If I must.” Reluctantly, I let go and climb into Sean’s Discovery.

It’s even warmer in here, and I can already feel myself fading.

Sean starts the engine and I reach out blindly to grab his arm. “Thank you, again. For coming to get me.”

“You’re welcome.” His voice is a low grumble and it’s so sexy it makes me smile.

“I’m sorry, but I think I’m going to be asleep in about five seconds.” Maybe even less than that. This seat is surprisingly comfy.

He grabs my hand, and I’m pretty sure he kisses it before setting it on my thigh. “Go to sleep, Vic.”

The next thing I know,Sean’s gently shaking me awake.

“We’re back,” he says, quietly.

I blink my eyes open and it takes me a second to realise he’s brought me to my lodge. It’s still dark out, but the sky’s already lightening. I get out and Sean walks me to my door.

He follows me inside and guides me to my bedroom.

Things are definitely looking up.

“Are you staying?” I grab the edges of his coat and tug him towards me.

He wraps his arms around me but shakes his head. “I can’t. I promised to show my sister and brother-in-law around while they’re here. I’ve taken the week off work to see them. And now I’ve got Reed to deal with too.”

Of course he wants to spend time with them. They’re his family.

Well, not Reed, but he sounded like he needs a friend right now.

I rest my forehead against his. “I’ll probably be busy helping Hailey and Char when they bring the baby home.”

“But we’re doing this, right?” He pulls back to meet my eyes. “Us? This isn’t ending when you go back to Edwinstowe, is it?”

“No.” I cup his jaw and stroke along the rough stubble. The thought of letting him go now makes me feel ill. “I can’t lose you again, Sean. I don’t want to.”

“I don’t want to lose you either.” His smile is soft when he adds, “It’s taken us long enough to find each other again.”

“An hour and a bit isn’t far. We can do this.”

“We can.” He closes the distance and kisses me. It’s like coming home. I sink into it, losing myself in his warmth and his strength, and I can’t believe it’s only been two weeks since we reconnected. “We’re not rushing into this, are we?”

“No. I don’t think so.” He smiles at me, no trace of uncertainty. “Does it feel like we are to you?”

“No.” It really doesn’t. “It probably should, though.”

“Probably.”

I kiss him again, long and deep, safe in the knowledge that I get to do this for as long as he’ll let me. Even when I leave here and return home. That thought makes it easier for me to step back and let him go. “You should get back to your house full of guests.”

He smirks. “Are you kicking me out?”

“Yes. Because I need to get at least a few hours’ sleep before I take Joe back to the hospital and that’s not going to happen if you don’t leave.” I take another step back and notice the prominent bulge in his jeans. “Like right now. Immediately.”

I yawn, and that seems to be the thing that does it.
