“Fuck,” Logan breathed, kissing his way along Cole’s jaw, his throat, hands tight in Cole’s hair as he tilted his head to one side to get at his neck. Teeth scraped along Cole’s skin, and he arched into it, part of him wondering what it would be like if Logan bit him. Was that how shifters completed their bonds? Cole had no idea, but before he could chase that train of thought, Logan moaned again, much more growl injected this time, and the deep rumbling sound robbed Cole of coherent thought.

His cock rubbed against Logan’s as they both thrust upwards. His hand brushing Logan’s belly with each stroke, the heat between them setting his skin on fire. Cole felt the pleasure build, familiar and yet nothing like the orgasms he’d experienced before. His body sang under Logan’s touch, every kiss, every press of teeth, heightening the sheer joy he felt inside. And although he wanted this moment to never end, it felt too good not to give in to it.

Logan bit down, harder this time, and Cole was done. The sharp sting mixed with the pleasure coursing through his body sending him tumbling over the edge. He cried out, cock pulsing in his hand, and Logan wasn’t far behind him.

He came with his teeth set against the base of Cole’s throat, warm breath tickling Cole’s skin as Logan held him close.

Neither of them moved.

The sea lapped gently around them, the sound of their breathing loud in the silence surrounding them.

Cole never wanted to leave this spot and suspected Logan felt much the same.

Out here nothing else mattered, only them.

Leaving meant facing the harsh reality that waited for them, and Cole wasn’t ready for that. Most shifters mated for life; he’d read that at school and had always rolled his eyes at it because what made their feelings for each so special? But now? The connection he felt with Logan was stronger than anything he’d felt before. And it had the potential to be so much more. Cole didn’t know a lot about shifter bonds, but he knew that once forged, they were hard to break.

Did he want that? With Logan?

A month ago he would’ve said, “No. No way.” But now?

His eyes had been opened to a lot of new experiences.

But the point was moot if he and Logan went their separate ways.

“Hey.” Logan straightened, small smile in place. “You okay?”

“Yeah, just thinking.”

Immediately his expression clouded, smile turning sad. “Nothing good ever came from that.”

Cole shrugged. “I don’t know, I’m hoping something might.” He needed to talk to this Aaron guy that Logan kept going on about. At Logan’s raised eyebrows, he added. “It’s nothing, don’t worry.”

With a sigh, Logan glanced back up at the house, then at the steadily rising sun. “We should get back. I need to go soon.”

The words pierced Cole’s chest like a knife. “How long?”

“A couple of hours, maybe.” He took Cole’s hand and led him to the shallows. “Have you thought about what you want to do?”

“A little.”

“And?”

“And I want to talk to a couple of people before I decide.”

Logan nodded. “Fair enough.” He pulled Cole in close again and wrapped his arms around him. “I’m so sorry things didn’t work out the way I promised you they would.” He sighed into Cole’s hair.

“You told me there were risks. I knew what I was getting into.”

“I know, but—”

Cole put his fingers over Logan’s mouth. “But nothing.” He traced along Logan’s bottom lip, then kissed him. It felt like goodbye, and Cole clung to him, pouring everything he felt into the kiss and hoping Logan understood.

Resting their foreheads together, Cole closed his eyes.

Was a life with Logan what he really wanted?

Could he handle all it would entail?
