But that would have to wait.
They had a pack to meet first. Not to mention Cole and Aaron to take care of.
He tried not to think about Cole. That way lay too may emotions for Logan to work through, and he couldn’t focus on it right now.
“What happens next?” He glanced over at where Max should’ve been but wasn’t. “And where’s Max?”
“She’s in the main house. Mothecombe’s giving her a quick check-up.”
“Everything okay?” Logan asked, worry creeping in. And how the fuck had he slept through her leaving?
John smiled. “Yeah, just routine.”
Good.
Logan would never forgive himself if something happened to Max and the baby. He’d brought Cole to them without realising they were being tracked.
“Come on, help me get these two inside. Mothecombe wants to examine them both.”
Logan jumped onto the ground and stretched out his stiff muscles, taking the opportunity to have a look around. “What is this place?”
John came to stand next to him. “Used to be a holiday park before. Now the cottages are filled with Mothecombe Pack members.”
None of which were anywhere to be seen. Logan would’ve expected at least a few to be here when strangers arrived on their territory.
John caught him looking around. “They know to stay out of sight at certain times of the year.” He gestured to Cole and Aaron still in the van. “Come on, let’s get these two inside.”
There was no putting it off any longer. No amount of avoiding the situation was going to make it go away. “Yeah, okay. I’ll take Cole,” he added in case there was any doubt.
John rolled his eyes. “Of course.”
Aaron was Logan’s best friend, but Cole...? He didn’t know what Cole was, but he knew he needed him close, and the thought of anyone else touching him made him want to snarl. Although the upcoming full moon wasn’t helping matters, Logan had the feeling he’d behave this way regardless. And now Cole was a shifter... No. He couldn’t go there.
Not yet anyway.
Too much of their future was up in the air.
First things first: get them inside and get them awake.
Cole groaned when Logan picked him up, but his eyes stayed closed. Thank fuck, because Logan didn’t want to have that conversation out here where anyone could be listening. John might trust everyone here, but that didn’t mean Logan had to.
You’re all on the same side.
That might be true, but so much had gone wrong already, Logan was wary.
He waited for John to scoop up Aaron, like he weighed nothing, then asked, “Where to?”
“Follow me.”
He led the way to the front door of a house that was far grander than Logan had expected, and he let out a low whistle.
“I know, right?” John said, glancing back over his shoulder. “Before everything changed, this place used to be in all the posh house and garden magazines.”
Logan could believe it. The front gardens still seemed well looked after. “What happened? Why did they leave?”
John scoffed. “Why do you think? Isaac said they had family in Jersey. He offered them a reasonable price for the house and the lands and urged them to go. So they did.”
Yeah, if you had the money, then leaving the country before it got difficult to do so was the safest option. It was what Logan would’ve done if he’d been human and rich.
