Riley looked down at the shredded beer mat and sighed. “I thought you weren’t going to pry?”
Nick laughed and shook his head.
Abi looked torn. “Fuck. I did say that, didn’t I?” She sat back in her chair and reached for her pint. “Okay, I won’t. But you need to talk to Alex before we go to the lodge. I won’t be able to relax if you’re still moping and he’s still calling me wanting to know why.”
Riley spluttered, almost choking on his pint. “I never said I was definitely coming.”
Abi waved him away as though his feeble protests were beneath her. “You are, though, aren’t you?”
Hell, why not? Regardless of what happened last time, he did love it there. It might do him good to get away for a bit. “Yeah, okay.”
Abi beamed at him. “Awesome.”
Clearing the air with Alex first might prove more difficult. Maybe he should just lie, tell him anything other than the actual truth, because that had the potential to put an end to their friendship. But this was Alex; he couldn’t lie to his best friend.
Fuck it.
