Abi looked as confused as Alex felt. “But—”

“After everyone had gone to bed, I kissed him.”

Alex didn’t think he’d ever heard Riley sound so defeated.

Abi gasped, her hand covering her mouth for a second. “Oh my God.” The sinking feeling in Alex’s stomach threatened to overwhelm him, and all of a sudden, he knew. “I don’t understand,” she said, her hand back on Riley’s arm.

Oh, but Alex did.Jesus Christ, it wasn’t a fucking dream.

“He forgot.” Riley walked over to the car and leaned his arms on the roof, head down. “I kissed him, and he kissed me back, and I thought—”

Riley’s breath hitched, and Alex had never felt so useless. Riley was his best friend, and he was hurting, but Alex had no idea what to do. The mess of feelings inside him was just too complicated to unravel right then.

Riley carried on. “I thought that wasit, you know? No need for stupid confessions. He knew how I felt, and he seemed to feel the same. It was fucking perfect.” Riley turned round slowly, and Alex knew he should duck back inside, but his feet were rooted to the spot. “And then we woke up the next morning, and—”

When Riley looked up, his gaze met Alex’s and his eyes widened in horror. “Fuck.”
