Thanks. We’re excited
The three dots bounced beneath his message. Jenna waited, still shivering in her seat as the heater finally kicked on.
I hoped it wouldn’t be painful for you to hear
Jenna swiped at a tear that had fallen onto her cheek. She and Travis hadn’t ever talked about her diagnosis, but her parents had talked with him, no doubt. She wanted to drop the phone—wanted to back away from this conversation like it was a rattlesnake in the middle of the trail. Instead, she typed.
It was painful, but not because I’m not happy for you. I am happy for you two. Hopefully that makes sense.
It does. And I’m sorry. Not only because this is painful. For all the other stuff. Something about how becoming a father makes you realize what an ass you’ve been. Hopefully that makes sense.
Jenna’s eyes filled to the brim, and she searched for something to blow her nose. She grabbed a knitted glove from the console and used that, then committed herself to finding a solution to her current work/life tissue shortage.
Thank you, and I was an ass, too. More of the stubborn variety
Really? Didn’t notice. Just unfortunate our vacations always seemed to overlap
Jenna laughed and sniffled.
When are you coming out next?
We were thinking May
When the parents are back from partying in the desert
Ten bucks says Mom gets a tramp stamp
I see your tattoo and raise you an ear piercing
Jenna snorted.
We’re the responsible parties in this relationship now
Please don’t put that burden on me
I’m already trying to figure out how to not ruin the next generation
Jenna grinned and held her hands in front of the vents. She exhaled as heat infused her fingertips.
You’ll be great. When’s Eliana due?
July
You’re making her travel seven months pregnant?
Hey, she wanted to come out in June when it’s warmer. This was our compromise
Send me the dates
So you can schedule over them? ??
Exactly.
May 11-18
Perfect. Booking my campsite
Good luck with that. We both know everything was booked up months ago
