HA! You said the 16th! That’s Monday!
Andrea 5:48pm
I said SUNDAY the 16th. I just read through the messages too
Penny 5:49pm
So we’re both right. Kind of
Andrea 5:49pm
I’m sorry I messed up the date. And your camping trip
Penny 5:49pm
I’m sorry my brain skipped over the Sunday part. It’s fine, Dre. I’ll see you tomorrow morning
"It’s no problem.I can drive you back down and then come back up for the evening," Kelty offered as Sean parked the van.
Penny checked the time on her phone. “It’s already four. You wouldn’t get back up here until eight thirty.”
Kelty waved her off as they piled out. “It’s seriously not a big deal. Still plenty of time to enjoy the fire.”
"Are you sure?" Penny bit her lip. She felt like a doofus. Even if Andrea had messed up her text message, she should’ve noticed the discrepancy and clarified. Or she should’ve driven up herself so she had a vehicle. So many shoulds so little time.
“I’m sure. Let me just change out of this.” Kelty beelined for her tent, and Penny jogged to hers. She unzipped the tent and hurriedly stuffed her clothes into her duffel bag, then packed up her sleeping bag and grabbed her pillow.
As her knees scraped the ground, she remembered the air pump and reached for it. She couldn’t wait around to help Brett find the leak, but she could at least pump the mattress up for him. Penny felt for the valve and attached the pump, then crouched up against the wall with her knees on the tent floor.
“Are you filling the mattress right now?” Brett called from outside the tent.
“Maybe?” Penny pumped the handle faster.
He sighed, and she could almost see him with his hands on his hips, giving her a look that said, seriously?“I can do that after you go.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I just didn’t want to—”
The tent opened with a zip. “Seriously. Stop.” Brett noticed her sleeping bag and pillow and grabbed them. “Just bring your bag.”
“I wanted to help.”
He nodded. “I know.” Brett took her things and pulled back. He was obviously annoyed, and why shouldn’t he be? Here they’d invited her on their trip, driven her up, packed and prepared all the food besides the snacks she’d been assigned, and now she was ruining everything.
Penny scrambled after him, grabbing her duffel and shoving her feet into her shoes. Her ribs felt like they’d shrunk in the wash. “I’m sorry I can’t—”
“Penny.” Brett turned and fixed her with a serious stare. “Stop apologizing.”
She pursed her lips. “But I’m wrecking your weekend.”
“You’re not wrecking anything.”
She switched the duffel into her other hand. “I’m just sorry I didn’t check the date.”
Brett shook his head. “We all make mistakes, and I already told you to stop apologizing.”
Penny’s face pinched. ”But I’m Canadian.”
Brett’s lips twitched, and his arm tightened, choking her pillow. “Will you just get in the damn van?”
