Chapter 16
Kid, Treycore, and Aerysn crept up behind a warehouse that, given the bars around broken windows, looked abandoned.
After they’d emerged from the portal, Aerysn had taken off and left Kid and Trey while he scouted around for a place for them to seek shelter. When he returned, he brought some food and clothes for Kid and Trey. He also brought some tools to get Treycore out of his restraints. Then he guided them through the woods into a nearby town he’d discovered. Said he had a place they could use to strategize and work out their next move.
They headed through an alley, making their way between a building and a retaining wall before Aerysn stopped abruptly. He pulled his shirt off over his head, and Kid enjoyed his body, something he could appreciate more now that his and Treycore’s lives weren’t in danger. He was a hot motherfucker.
He heard a growl and turned to Trey, who was clearly not thrilled about how he was looking at Aerysn.
“What?” Kid said, shrugging.
Treycore rolled his eyes.
“What the fuck are you doing, Aerysn?” Treycore asked.
“Give me a sec.” Aerysn picked a rock up off the ground and wrapped it in his shirt. He pushed his wings out of his back and flew up to the second-floor window, where he hovered before bashing his hand with the rock into it, smashing the glass so the shards fell into the building.
As Aerysn descended back to the ground, Kid said, “Oh, wow. I totally thought you were trying to get a three-way going.”
Aerysn glanced between Kid and Treycore. “I wouldn’t have a problem with that.”
Treycore grabbed Kid’s shoulder and pulled him close. “Good to know,” he said through gritted teeth.
“Trey, lighten up,” Kid insisted.
“I’ll lighten up once I know you’re safe and that we have a plan. That we’re not wandering around aimlessly.”
“That’ll be easier to assure you of once we make sure this place is safe,” Aerysn said. “We need to remain in one place for a few hours.”
“Come here, Kid. I’ll fly you up,” Aerysn said before wrapping his arms around Kid. “Be careful with the glass.”
Kid rolled his eyes. “Okay, you immortals need to chill the fuck out. I’m not defenseless. I’ve been taking care of myself…well, since before I met Treycore. I may not be able to take care of myself when I’m surrounded by a bunch of rape-happy immortals, but I can handle a fucking window, thanks.”
“Fair point,” Aerysn said before taking off and helping Kid through the window.
Kid figured it was because he’d realized he was being a little overprotective because of their experience in Heaven, but they weren’t in immediate danger, so Trey and Aerysn needed to understand that he didn’t need anyone babysitting him.
Aerysn helped Treycore in through the window next, and then they searched around the warehouse to make sure they were alone.
Aerysn finally declared, “I think this will be a good place to squat for a while.”
He headed into a relatively bare room with a tin table placed against the wall and a couple of chairs scattered about. He glanced out a window on the far end of the room. “There’s a streetlamp outside, so I figure we should keep in here so we can get some light when it gets dark.”
Treycore closed the door to the room, and Kid walked over to one of the stray chairs and straddled the seat, wrapping his arms around the back. He wanted to pass out so that his brain could have a rest. How could he process everything that had happened to them over the past however-the-fuck-long they were in the immortal realms?
Aerysn grabbed a chair and dragged it beside the table before taking a seat.
“I think now would be a good time to tell me what the plan is,” Treycore said.
“I’m getting to that.”
Aerysn slid the dagger he’d stolen at the colosseum from his jeans pocket. He rested his left arm on the table and drove the tip into his wrist.
“What the fuck are you doing?” Kid asked, jumping to his feet and hurrying to Aerysn.
“Relax. I’m getting something.”
“Um…your fucking artery, is that what you’re getting?”
