It was possible. Treycore had been involved in enough missions that there were all sorts of information that had passed through him, but whether or not he would remember it when called upon to retrieve it was another thing altogether.
“So this colleague of yours, how do we even know he survived that shitshow back there?”
“We need to reach him, contact him, if we can.”
“How do I even know I can trust you?”
“You can trust him, Treycore,” Kid insisted. “He did everything he could to keep me safe.”
That much was true. As he looked Kid over, he saw that all his injuries were healed and that, miraculously, he had survived the Nest, if only because of that fucked-up challenge the prisoners had made.
But despite Kid’s survival, Treycore was still skeptical. “He needs something from me, Kid. That’s the only reason he helped you, that we know of. What if he’s working for the Almighty? Or Janka, for that matter? We don’t know this guy. Kid, I know you don’t know much about the heavens, but the reality is, it’s very likely the Almighty would have someone there to protect me, just because of His appreciation of me, because He’s so goddamn proud and wouldn’t want anyone fucking with me, essentially. I need more than this. Aerysn—”
“I can’t give you more than that. All I can tell you is it’ll make more sense once we find my confidant and Kinzer. And you can decide whatever you want to do from there. I don’t think either of you will object to us finding Kinzer.”
He had a point, Treycore had to admit, and right now, sides seemed so irrelevant. Aerysn was, at the very least, pretending to be on their side, and as long as he kept his guard up, he figured that was good enough.
“What should we do right now?” Treycore asked.
“First things first, I say we get some shelter, some food, and then I need to get in touch with my colleague.”
“You’re right about that, and I’m fine with finding some place to sleep, but if you do anything to try and hurt me or Kid, I’ll slit your throat. Do you understand? And I am in control of your weapon. I’m not giving you a chance to lose your shit and start coming at me with your sword. You got that?”
Aerysn grabbed his sword off the ground and handed it to Treycore. “That sounds like a fair compromise, as long as you are willing to work with me.”
“For now, but if I sense you have anything up your sleeve, Kid and I are out of here.”
“Fair enough.”
“You guys,” Kid said.
They turned to him, Treycore curious about what he needed.
“I think we need to find some clothes before we do anything else.”
Considering they’d been naked their entire time at the Nest, Treycore had hardly given it any thought, but Kid was right. Now that they were back on Earth, they needed clothes to blend in.
