Hayde battled the two remaining guards, his daggers blocking their swordplay. Hayde was quick on his feet and managed to evade them quite well. Kinzer was impressed.
Kryler backed Kinzer up into the fight so they were close to Hayde and the other immortals. Kinzer jabbed at Kryler, but Kryler shifted out of his sword’s path and kicked Kinzer’s leg out from under him so that he fell back.
“Shit.”
He was disoriented for a moment, before seeing Kryler’s sword coming crashing down. He rolled to the side, allowing the blade to clash with the tile.
As Kinzer hopped back up, he saw Hayde was too preoccupied with the guards’ swords to notice that the one nearest Hayde had a knife in his other hand, which judging by his movements, he was about to strike with. Kinzer tackled him from behind, piercing his sword through the guard’s back. Kryler was still on his tail, so he stepped around his victim and used him as a shield, letting Kryler’s sword pierce through him as well.
Kryler’s face was tensed into a grimace, so far from how relaxed he’d seemed when they’d first entered.
Beside Kinzer, Hayde jabbed at the remaining guard. His victim blocked it with his sword and moved close to Hayde. As Hayde brought his other dagger around for an attack, the guard snatched his wrist and bashed his forehead into Hayde’s, knocking him so hard that he flew back.
Kinzer wanted to help him, but he was too busy trying to keep on top of Kryler’s thrashes to take a break.
The guard stood over Hayde and drove his sword at Hayde’s chest, just as Raya had done.
A loud, guttural cry filled the air as a glistening blade severed the guard’s neck. His head remained attached for just a moment before it rolled onto his shoulder, and then it and the rest of his body collapsed to the floor.
Maggie stood behind him, holding the sword that had done him in.
Nice work.
She must have grabbed one of the other swords and taken it upon herself to rescue Hayde.
Kryler growled and continued his assault on Kinzer, backing him up to the wall. His blows were intense, and Kinzer was becoming more and more disoriented. He didn’t have the immortal energy required for this kind of fight.
Kryler flapped into the air and came down at Kinzer, descending with confidence, power.
Kinzer raised his sword, but one blow from Kryler was so intense that Kinzer’s arm flew back against the wall.
As Kryler’s sword neared him, he ducked and rolled out of its path.
A loud cry filled the air.
Kinzer spun around, preparing for Kryler’s next blow, but he stood on the tile, pale, still.
Hayde stood beside him, one of his daggers in his neck.
He yanked it out, allowing blood to geyser from it as the higherling collapsed onto the floor.
“No,” Kinzer said. “No, no, no.”
He raced to Kryler and rolled him onto his wings.
“What the fuck were you thinking?” Kinzer yelled at Hayde.
Hayde looked at him, bewildered. “I just saved your life.”
“I wasn’t in any immediate danger. There are three of us. We could have taken him if you’d been a little more patient.”
“I was expecting a ‘you’re welcome.’”
Kinzer jumped to his feet and marched to Hayde, backing him up against the wall.
“The whole reason I fucking came here was to ask him about Veylo. Now how the hell am I supposed to do that?”
Hayde’s mismatched eyes sank. “I’m sorry. I thought I was helping.”
