He winked at Hayde to let him know he had no intention of surrendering. He just needed Neeva and her goons to think that was the case.

“Dartavore, cuff them,” she said to the guard with the ponytail.

Kinzer headed for his room. “Let me just get—”

“Stop him, Kayvan!”

Kinzer heard the rattle of a chain. Something gripped onto his ankle and yanked back.

He fell forward, his body dragged across the floor. He glanced over his shoulder. A chain was wrapped around his ankle. It led to the higherling in the pixie-do, who he assumed was Kayvan.

She moved one hand over the other as she reeled Kinzer to her.

Hayde retrieved one of his daggers from his side and sent it flying through the air at Kinzer’s captor.

Kayvan released the chain and snatched it midair.

Kinzer knew this might be his only chance. He gripped onto the chain and tugged on it hard. He leapt onto his feet and scrambled into his room.

Goddammit. Today was not the day to leave my sword in the fucking car.

Hurrying to his bag, he fished out a syringe with the serum of the immortal sedative.

Hayde removed his other dagger from its sheath, but before he could use it, Neeva raised her hand. A yellow burst of light exploded from her palm. It struck Hayde, lifting him off the floor.

“Oh, fuck!” he exclaimed, his arms stretched out as his back slammed against the wall behind him.

He heard his back—

CRACK.

— and felt a severe pain rush through him.

As he collapsed onto the floor, he wondered if Neeva had broken a bone or the wall.

“Get him,” Neeva said. “I’ll get Kinzer.”

Her hips bobbed side to side, her ass cheeks bounced up and down, as she hurried across the cement floor, her heels clicking against the floor, obviously unfazed by her attack on Hayde.

Kayvan and Dartavore approached him.

Here we go.

Kinzer clung to the chain Kayvan had latched onto his ankle with.

He’d wrapped it around an overhanging U-shaped pipe beside the door and climbed so he could easily assault whoever entered.

When Neeva stepped in the room, he released the chain.

She looked up, but it was too late for her to react. He plowed into her and they fell together to the floor.

He stuck the syringe into her arm, but before he could pump the serum into her bloodstream, a burst of yellow light rushed from her hand. It catapulted him across the room along with the chain that had fallen beside them.

This powerful blast of energy was one of her gifts, a very effective tool during the War.
