I mean, it sounded a little boring to me, but for Cass, that was probably a stellar night, so I went along with it. Then I remembered it was one of his friends… Right…. She needed to be careful. There were uber killers and shit out there that had nothing to do with magic and demons that her seal couldn’t protect her from. Suddenly I was more scared for her than I was for myself, even with four powerful Others after me.
“And you know the rules, right?”
She rolled her eyes at me, but when I flashed my red demon eyes at her, to let her know how serious I was, she relented and rolled her eyes.
“Yes, Demon Mommy.”
I ignored that little jab, then waved my hand in a circle so she would continue.
She eventually gave in and recited, “If he looks at me funny, text you. Watch my drinks all night. If he makes any unwelcome advances, signal to you with the seal and you’ll come and smite him. Don't get into the car with him on the first date, and make sure that I carry a taser with me at all times.”
I gave her an exasperated look because she’d added the taser part herself. She knew what I wanted to hear and she mumbled out the rest. “And a knife in an easily accessible place, so I can use it at a moment’s notice. I’m not worried about things like the police and blood when my life is on the line.”
As soon as she finished, I gave her a big atta girl smile. “Yep! Just let me know, and I will take care of everything. I’ll be very mad at you if you get hurt when you could’ve just killed him but chose not to because you were worried about cops or some silly shit like that.” She needed to be reminded that I was the demon who held her contract, and therefore, she was my responsibility.
She gave me a small, appreciative smile, while I was grinning at the thought of that fucker bleeding to death if he tried anything.
“I know you worry about me, but I will be fine. Promise.” She winked at me and got up.
“You better be,” I said.
“I thought you would want me to be bad like you,” she cooed, as if she were making fun of me.
“Yeah, but not too bad. How about a little bad? Like, human-bad.” My worry for her started to seep into my words, and I hated it. It made me feel weak, but I didn't like thinking about all the bad shit that could happen to her because she was human.
“I’m going to be fine. Promise.”
I nodded, knowing that I had to let her go whether I liked it or not.It would make me a crazy person if I told her she couldn’t go, right?!
“Well, have fun and call me when you get home,” I said as my last-ditch effort to calm myself.
She smiled and nodded to me as she walked to the door.
“I'm serious.” My panic bled out of my voice a little bit.
She laughed before she shut the door.
With that now on my mind too, I decided to answer a few emails to get a jump on Monday and finish out some reports for the budget meeting.
As soon as I was done, I got up and crossed my room to the printing machine to grab the copies. I suddenly felt a chill in the air. A shimmer of something crawled up my spine, warning me something was coming, and I knew at that moment that the boys were starting the war, and I smiled with glee.
Before I could do anything, the doors to my office burst open and all four of them walked in with dark witch wards surrounding them, making it so they could pass as human to get through my wards.
You would think my mind would focus on that fact, but no, my brain betrayed me with,Oh, mama, they look even more delicious than I remembered. Especially all together as a set.
Con, with his angelic gold locks and pretty model face, paired with a gray and white suit, looked posh, fashionable, and effortlessly put together. War, with his long, wild hair and his bulging tattooed muscles in a wife beater and black jeans, looked like a rough man wet dream. Fame, with his conservative suit, dark locks, and serious face, made me want to tease him just to get a glimpse of that smile I know he never gave freely. Then there was Death. With all his beautiful angles and sharp blue eyes that stared into your soul, his button down that looked tailored for his body untucked with black slacks and loafers. It was like they all wanted me to soak my panties by just looking at them. Was that a strategy?
I licked my lips, not able to hold back my obvious desire for them. “So… it looks like you all made it out of Hell fine and dandy.”
War snorted. He was the first to look me up and down, like he was starving and I was his preferred meal. “Damn, goddess, you look even better than I remember.”
“It's only been a week,” I complained, even though I was just thinking the same thing. I didn't want him to know that I had been thinking about them. That would give them too much power.
Con stepped forward, his face looking hopeful. “We're going to give you the option to go through the portal willingly and calmly, then we can figure this”—he pointed to me and his brothers—“all out afterwards.”
At first, I thought I’d misheard him, because he had to know that I would never agree to that. Did they think I was so weak? Who the fuck did they think they were? How could they possibly think there was an 'us' after this? I was sure they knew that I would be stuck there forever if I stepped over, so why did they act like it was a temporary thing? It didn't matter. I wasn't going to let them.
“Yeah, not going to happen, hot stuff.” I winked his way, and he grinned.
