“I’ll come with you,” Giss said, strolling out with him. “So? Are we going to make a decision today?”
“I thought we did.”
She looked at him from the corner of her eye, trying to feign nonchalance. “Did we?”
“Yes. At least, I did. Orius is corrupt. I wouldn’t want my wife and kids there unprotected if I was off-world. But you wouldn’t be unprotected now. Tok’s mark on Zawri is your protection too.”
“Aren’t you even curious whether I love you?” she asked.
He shook his head.
She laughed. “You’re very sure of yourself, aren’t you?”
He shook his head again, then shrugged. “You said I can have you as a wife. That’s what I’ve wanted since the night in the cave. Until that’s done and legal, I’ve got nothing to say that would cast too bright a light on things.”
More laughter bubbled from her throat. “Nothing controversial? Nothing we could fight over?”
“Exactly.”
“So even if I were to get in trouble, I suppose you wouldn’t even want to punish me?”
The corners of his mouth rose in a small smile. “We already are what we are in that regard,” he said.
She wrinkled her nose at him and sniffed. “We’ll see.”
“Yes, I look forward to our seeing.”
