Oh shit. It looked as if there was bullshit that I had to deal with today. June and I had him when we were fifteen. The one time I decided to break my virginity, I ended up with the devil's daughter.
June was one of the most manipulative and chaotic people I'd ever encountered. Why she refused to grow up, I don't know, but by the time we turned nineteen, I parted ways with her, but not my son. One look at Junior, and I knew he was mine. I didn't need a paternity test. But when we split, she swiftly threw my ass on child support. I was salty because I always made sure to take care of my boy. I just didn't want anything else to do with her bitter ass.
June didn't see shit that way. She never missed a beat in cussing my ass out. We had joint custody of Junior, but he'd expressed plenty of times that he was ready to live with me full-time.
Her petty ass refused to agree, though. I unlocked the car doors and stepped out. Junior and I locked eyes, and he rolled his eyes upward. He was clearly over his morning already. Both of them stopped right in front of me. Before I could even open my mouth to see what was going on, June's loud ass spilled the beans.
"You need to get this boy. I came home last night from work, and he had some lil' ho laid up in my house."
"Now, Ma, why you cappin'? You know that ain't even happen," Junior interjected.
"So what happened, Junior?" I questioned with my brow raised.
"There was a girl over here, and I do like her, but we weren't laid up. She's my partner for this biology project we have. Masaid not to leave the house while she's not here, so I invited her over so we could get our project done. We ate our snacks and watched a movie while we worked on our project. By the time we were done, it was nine-thirty. Ma came home with some new nigga she met, and I guess we ruined her night. I told her I was sorry for not telling her I had company, but she wasn't trying to hear it. She cussed and kicked out my classmate. I'm slightly worried if her parents will make a complaint to the school because Ma was mad disrespectful last night," Junior relayed.
I shook my head. "Thank you for telling your side, son. Go wait for me in the truck while I talk to your mom."
"Yes, sir." Junior walked away and climbed into my truck.
Once he was out of earshot, I looked at June. "June, how many times have I told you that you have to assess the situation first before you jump to conclusions? Nothing happened, yet you still went off on him and his friend. Are you trying to get locked up again? You verbally assaulted somebody else's child. If the parents make a complaint, yo' ass can be charged."
June rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her small chest. She was small up top with a curvy body and a big ass. June was still pretty, but I could see the wildlife she led was starting to catch up to her. In her free time, all she did was drink like a fish. She started to have those alcoholic lips, and her breath definitely carried the stench of stale liquor or beer. June had a pretty brown complexion with oval-shaped brown eyes. I knew a lace wig hated to see her coming because that's all she wore. Years had gone by, and I had no idea if she had short or long hair. It was obvious why other niggas were attracted to her, but only if they knew the drama that came with her ass.
June's loud voice filled my ears. "First off, I wish her people would try to come for me. I got some for anybody who thinks they got some for me. Secondly, I know what I saw last night, which is why I went off. Junior gets around yo' ass and switch upbecause he knows you gon' always take his side over mine. Y'all double-team me a lot, and I hate that shit. I do the best I can for him!" she yelled with much attitude.
"June, ain't nobody double teaming you. You know I try my hardest to hear both of y'all and to support both of y'all. That's why I've been pleading with you to let me take over and raise him. You did the hard part. This is the time when I need to be more hands-on with him because he's growing into a man. That's why y'all bumping heads so much. You having a different nigga runnin' in and out yo' crib is adding more fuel to the fire."
June dropped her arms and scoffed. "Nigga, please. You ain't foolin' no damn body. You only want Junior to live with you so y'all can live like one big happy family with that bitch Travel. Wake the fuck up, Trek. I been known you wanted yo' so-called best friend. Tryin' to hide that makes you more delusional than you are."
I shook my head. "Aye, watch yo' mouth. Don't disrespect Travel because she damn sure don't do that to you. Next, June, you're focused on the wrong shit right now. We're talking about the best interests of our son."
June gave a fake chuckle with her head tossed back briefly. "Boy bye. Don't change the subject. You still can't admit it."
"June, you wanna argue right now, and I ain't got the time. I gotta get this boy to school." I tried to walk away, but her ass jumped right in front of me. I released a deep sigh.
"Junior will make it on time because you always make it here early as hell. You just want to avoid what I said. Admit it, Trek. You're in love with your best friend." Her eyes bore into mine.
See, that was the reason I stopped going inside her house. She always had some shit going on. I hated when she turned the heat off her ass. June was the queen of deflection.
"June, I can make things easier for you. Just let Junior move in with me. You'll have more freedom to go out and live yourlife. He'll come to you on the days that you prefer. You might not want to admit it, but he's at the point where he needs to be with his father. The way he approaches his manhood would be better if it came from my guidance. Think about it."
I went to step around her, but June stepped in front of me again. "All that sounds good, but I know you're in love with Travel. You have always loved her, even when we were together," she quietly voiced.
"June, when I was with you, I was with you. I never cheated on you. You had my time, attention, and loyalty. Can you say the same?"
She swallowed and briefly glanced away.
"Exactly. I wasn't the one who ruined us."
"I never had your love, though," June stated, stepping out of my way. "That's why she's Junior god mom. I'm not a fuckin' fool, Trek."
"That's a lie, and you know it. We've been over since we were nineteen. There's no way you're still holding on to what we had. We're in our thirties now. Travel is my best friend. Let it go, June."
She shook her head. "I'm not holding on to you, but the love is still there. It always has been, Trek."
I nodded my understanding. That's all I could do. "Take care of yourself, June. We'll see you Sunday night." I walked away and climbed into my truck.
I hurriedly pulled away from the curb just in case she tried to jump in front of my truck. "Son, do you want your refresher order or your frozen Frappuccino order?"
