"Do you guys hear that sound? That's the strong heartbeat of your baby. Mama, you're just shy of eight weeks and doing great so far. Do you all have any questions for me?" Dr. Collins quizzed?
She was a tall, middle-aged, black woman who knew her shit. From her extensive knowledge and the gentle way she handled Travel, I knew we were in expert hands. Dr. Collins turned off the machine and gently helped Travel sit up on the bed.
"Thank you, Dr. Collins. You've covered just about everything, so we're good for now," Travel replied.
"Alright. Nurse Bays will be at the front desk with your forms, which include my number and your prenatal vitamins prescription. It was lovely to meet you both, and I look forward to our new journey together," Dr. Collins professed.
"Sounds good. Thank you again, Dr. Collins. Enjoy the rest of your day," I expressed, and helped Travel from the bed.
"You guys as well."
She left the room, and I turned to Travel. We stood in the middle of the room and held each other. I loved being here with her. I couldn't thank God enough.
"As happy as I am right now, I need to know if you want to go through with this pregnancy or not?"
Travel peered up from my chest with a look of confusion written on her face. "Why would you ask me a thing like that? Do you not want our baby?"
"Of course I do, beautiful, but I'm also not some caveman. As much as I want our baby, your body is yours, and I want you to have the freedom to say if you want to or don't want to go through another pregnancy."
Travel smiled and pecked my lips. "You have always been so thoughtful, and it's one of your many character traits that I love. But, in this case, I want our baby. I want everything that comes with you, and that's the good and bad. I know how to speak up if I don't want to participate in something. Furthermore, I appreciate you always having my best interest at heart."
I smirked and pecked her lips. "Thank you for being the best partner in the world. I heard you loud and clear. Are you ready to get out of here and grab some lunch?"
"Hell, yes. This baby got me famished."
"Come on, big girl."
Travel laughed at me as we exited the room. We received her forms. After a short walk to my truck, we headed to her favorite restaurant.
The drive was going cool until I noticed a mini-SUV following us. I switched lanes to be sure. Minutes passed, and once another sedan jumped behind me, the mini SUV followed suit.
We were being followed. The last time that happened, I did a job. Now, I was worried that work followed me home, which was always my biggest fear.
I checked my rear-view mirror and that mini-SUV sped up. As close as they were, I couldn't see the driver because the truck was completely tinted. It was evident that my soon-to-be wife had to witness me in full action.
"Travel, baby. I don't want you to be alarmed, but somebody is following us."
"Wait, really? What should I do? I'm scared."
"Just sit back and relax as much as you can. Things are about to get a little rou?—"
My sentence was cut off when that mini-SUV rammed into the back of my truck.
"Shit!" Travel screamed and put her head down in her lap.
"Hold on, love." I jumped over to the next lane and pulled out my piece. I'd barely had my window down when gunfire took place behind us.
"Ahh!" Travel screamed.
My heart pounded as bullets penetrated my truck. It wasn't bulletproof like my car, which I used to transport goods, but after today, it would be.
I lowered my window and shot back while steering my truck. Their truck wasn't bulletproof either. They swerved but quickly gained control.
Shit.I stomped on the gas, moving through the lanes. It pained my heart that my baby was so scared, even in this damn situation. I had to end this shit quickly because I didn't want her to miscarry from the stress and fear.
I jumped into a new lane, with them niggas gaining on me. There was not enough space to bust a U-turn, so I slowed down so they could catch up with me.
