Kujo glances at me before he focusses on Sable.“Barge found out something, involving property ownership. It might be the motivation behind all of this, and why Mercy is the center of it.”

“What’s this about? Her mother’s house?”Sable gently squeezes our joined hands.“She didn’t know there was money to pay the bills when they sold the house, let alone those fuckers stealing all the cash when they sold it.”

My shoulders slump at the reminder. The debts could have been paid and now they are still there, all while my uncle has the money that’s legally mine when he sold the house.I didn’t even know he sold the house.I was under the assumption it was the bank who took it.Shit.I’m so damn stupid, with issues preventing me from functioning normally, and simply letting others deal with everything.

Kujo curses and snaps, “No, this is not about Selene’s house, but I’ll make sure that fucker pays back every damn penny to my daughter.”

Hearing Kujo’s anger and the promise in those words is nice.Yet, I have no idea if I’ll ever see the money again. If he by some miracle does manage to get the money back from my uncle, I would be able to pay the bills my mother left behind and have a fresh start.

Sable pulls me against his body and asks, “What did Barge find out?”

Kujo focusses on me when he asks, “When did you leave your uncle’s place?”

I glance up at Sable and he gives my hip a gentle squeeze to urge me to answer his president.

Swallowing hard, I whisper, “Two weeks.”

“Two weeks ago?”he asks.

I nod.

Kujo rattles, “That’s also around the time some Sheridan Slayers fuckers show up in our town without reason. They were clearly looking for her, because Otto feared she would reach out to me.Which she did, but not the way he thinks.”

I can feel his eyes on me and when I glance at my biological father he asks, “You weren’t going to contact me, were you?You just broke into my place for the night and were going to leave come morning when your clothes were dry and clean.Sable told me how you tried to bolt when you heard I was coming that night.”

Another bob of my head, because I was going to leave in the morning, no matter how nice it was to spend the night warm and cozy.

“Just as I thought.Well, darlin’?Barge found out you have all of those fuckers by the balls.”Kujo grins.“Wanna know why?”

I slowly nod, not having a clue what he’s talking about, but liking the direction this discussion is heading in.

“You’re the legal heir of your mother’s things.Barge found out your mother had a will and there’s more property than just your mother’s house. She might not have had the money in her bank to pay for her treatment, but she did own multiple buildings.”

“What?”I gasp, not understanding how this is possible and why I never knew my mother owned property...as in multiple buildings?

“The warehouse, Sheridan Slayers’s clubhouse?Your property.Otto’s house next to it?Your property.”

I blink a few times to let his words sink in.When they do?Laughter rips from me and once I start, I can’t seem to stop.

“Fuck,” Kujo rumbles.“I’m not even done yet.”

A snort leaves me along with the word, “More?”

Kujo rubs the back of his neck.“There are supposed to be some legal papers. An investment of some kind about a piece of land.Everything once belonged to your grandfather, but the man put everything in his daughter’s name.He thought it would prevent the government from taking his belongings if they ever came after him. When the war broke out between our clubs, taking casualties on both sides, along with Selene and my relationship going down the drain...she ran.Otto might have known everything was in his sister’s name, but I’m guessing it wasn’t an issue...until now.Did your mother have contact with Otto when she was still alive?”

I shake my head and turn to Sable, wanting to say more but not feeling comfortable at all.

“Excuse us a moment, Prez,” Sable grunts.“We’ll be right back.”

Sable guides me through the hall and into our room.

Once the door falls shut, I whisper everything out in a waterfall of words, “My mother contacted my uncle about a week or so before she died, asking for help with the medical bills. He was all smiles and sweet, Linus too. It’s why I thought he was my friend.Promises made of thin air from both of them until my mother died.He made me pack a bag and took me to the clubhouse.I thought they were helping me, but I found out the hard way that I was supposed to be Linus’s property.I didn’t know about anything being in my mother’s name.I thought the bank took the house and the bills were stacked so high there wasn’t any money. My uncle promised my mother he would help...all while he helped himself to...to...”

A sob rips from me and I’m being pulled against Sable’s hard chest. His warmth and scent surround me to let me pour out my grief as I sag against him.
