“Good to know.” I held my Jeep’s rear gate open for the dogs to climb inside. “Now, why don’t you tell me what you meant by those comments about Beckett. You know, the ones you thought I’d forget?”

Hale barked out a laugh. “You should ask him yourself. Give him a call. He’d love that. He’s a vampire, you know. Up all damn night.”

I laughed at his comments but they stayed with me on the short drive home, while I fed the pups, and when I finally flopped down onto my bed. I was tired and should’ve prioritized sleep since I was due back at the café early tomorrow, but that tiredness plus the leftover energy from another run-in with Beck—not to mention Devon—left me edgy.

And reckless.

That was how I ended up texting my brother.

Sunny:Can you give me Beckett’s number?

Lance:Sure. Why?

Sunny:Nothing important.

Lance:Cool. Everything good?

Sunny:Great. You?

Lance:Another day in paradise.

I didn’t let myself think too hard about the message I typed out to Beck. No need to overanalyze here. All I wanted was the facts.

Sunny:Someone from your staff came over after service and got a little frisky.

Beckett:I beg your pardon?

Sunny:Oh hi, it’s Sunny by the way.

Beckett:I figured that since your brother just messaged me with a warning to be nice to you. May I ask what you’ve told him?

Sunny:Do you know how to be nice?

Beckett:Who was it and what happened, Sunny?

Sunny:Hale was right. This is amusing.

Beckett:You’re saying I should wake up Hale to find out for myself?

Sunny:Nothing happened. One of your people just likes to run his mouth and doesn’t know how to keep track of his hands. I handled it.

Beckett:Give me a name or I’ll fire everyone.

Sunny:Why would you do that?!?

Beckett:Because someone can’t keep their hands to themselves and that’s a problem for me.

Sunny:I don’t want to get anyone fired. THAT would be a mistake.

Beckett:And yet you made a point of telling me that it happened so you must be looking for some reaction.

Sunny:You know…I’ve been told you’re capable of carrying on civilized conversations.

Beckett:Your point being?

Sunny:Why can’t you do that with me?

Beckett:I could ask you the same thing.
