"She certainly would," I replied, laughing but dead serious.
"Bring some wine," April said after another glance at my chest. She stood and produced my long-abandoned t-shirt from the massage table. She tossed it to me, but I didn't pull it on. "Whatever you like. I'm not picky."
I looked over my shoulder at the stacks of books piled on her trunk. "And what are we reading?"
She drummed her fingertips against her hips. "Don't judge," she warned, wagging a finger at me. "I'm currently on a historical romance kick. You know, dukes, highlanders, viscounts. It's good stuff."
"Right," I said, slightly confused. "Yeah. Sounds great. I'll just head to the bookstore down the street, and pick up a, uh—"
She held up her hand, cutting me off as she crossed the room. "Have this one," she said, chucking a paperback in my direction.
Charming the Duke, it read. I thumbed through the pages, nodding as I went. I could do this. She laughed as she watched my reactions, and it was obvious that she didn't think I'd go along with this.
"I see that smirk," I said. "That smirk says you don't think I'm going to read this book." I tapped the cover, where a guy who looked like an extra from the cast ofHamiltonwas pawing a chick in a fancy gown. "I'm all over this. I've got a task and purpose, ma'am, and I'm all over it."
April pointed to the watch on her wrist. "Wedding season in the Hamptons waits for no one," she said. "I have a date with ten pounds of fondant."
"And me." The book and my shirt in hand, I stalked toward her until she was backed against the edge of the countertop. "Don't forget about that date with me."
She looked up, her eyes narrowing in challenge. "What do you think you're doing?" she asked.
I nipped at the corner of her mouth. "Getting a taste of you to tide me over until tonight."
"Are you always this"—she arched up, her hands on my shoulders as her lips captured mine for a brief second—"hungry?"
I leaned into her, kissing her with more heat and meaning than I knew I had to give. "Not until now," I said, my lips hovering over hers.
