I shook my head. “H-how could you know that?” I glanced in the direction where I’d just run from. “Unless you were there.” The wolf that came out of nowhere, saving me, flashed through my mind. I hadn’t gotten a good look at it because it appeared and then disappeared quickly.
Henry whined next to me. That was when I remembered that he’d gotten into a fight as well, with a wolf double his size. And he was still relatively okay. As if someone or something had saved him too.
I looked off toward the side of my home, where that other wolf had sauntered off to. That wolf was also bigger than the ones in the forest.
No. This is not a movie, Reese.
I had to remind myself.
“Reese.” Chael took another step forward, but this time when I tried to move back, he caught me by the elbow. “Are you hurt?”
“What is going on?” I demanded. “Tell me what’s happening. Why am I being hunted by freaking wolves?”
His hold on my elbow tightened. I looked into his eyes, and my breath locked in my throat when I saw them gleam, a visible glow that he couldn’t hide.
“Are you…”
“I’m a shifter, Reese. A werewolf.”
That statement was enough to send my mind spiraling. But he wasn’t done. His following comment was the topping on this strange shifter salad.
“And you’re my mate.”
A chuckle spilled from my mouth, but there was no humor whatsoever in it. “Y-your mate.”
More laughter because talk about absurd.
“We should—”
I stepped out of Chael’s hold and nodded my head. “No, no. Because that makestotalsense.” Another round of laughter.
My mind buzzed and hummed with his words, mixing with the events that had just taken place.
“Yeah, that makes a lot… of… whew.” I started to feel even dizzier. The last thing I remembered was looking up and seeing the full moon before everything went black.
CHAPTER12
Chael
I caught Reese in my arms before she could hit the ground. Though tension continued to pulse through my veins, something blossomed deep inside my chest as soon as she was within my grasp. I lifted her higher in my hold and leaned in, inhaling the crown of her head.
Perfect.
She smelled like perfection, and god, how much I’d missed being in her presence over the past few weeks. As much as I wanted to revel in her company and scent, we had to get out of there. It was clear that my mate was no longer safe in her home. I cursed myself for pulling Chance away from watching over her.
If Christophe hadn’t sent me that article from theTexas Gazettethat quoted her, I wouldn’t have gotten there in time. When I saw that article and Christophe found out that the article sparked an investigation by the state health department, I knew Reese was in trouble.
“Chance,we need to collect her things and get her out of here,” I told my brother as I carried my mate up to her front door. I knew I was smearing blood from the two wolf shifters I’d killed all over her, but I couldn’t put her down.
Chance had spared the third. I had silently told him to bring all three bodies, the two bodies and live shifter, back to his truck for the long drive back to New Mexico.
“They’re secured,”He told me as he came up behind me. I watched as he picked the lock to Reese’s front door. I still held on to her in my arms.
Henry followed the three of us inside. I supervised and gave out orders, directing my brother to pack up Reese’s clothing and belongings to head out.
“Wait…” I paused just as we passed the kitchen. “Chocolate.”
Chance’s permanent frown became even more prominent as he raised an eyebrow.
