“Where is she, cousin?” Ronan insisted. “Our mate was hurt.”
I gritted my teeth. “How did you know that?” I knew Sera wouldn’t have called them.
“I told them,” Chance said.
I turned to face my brother. “Why the hell would you do that?”
“I was about to tell you before they pulled up,” he replied. “I scented something strange.”
“You two need to stop doing that fucking silent talking bullshit and tell us where our mate is,” Ronan seethed.
“First of all, you will not come into my damn commune and talk to me like you run anything. My pack is peaceful but make no mistake, my father’s blood still runs through my veins, and I can quickly forget the past five decades of peace if pushed too far.”
They both glared at me, their hands fisted at their sides. Neither one of them made a move, however. My cousins might be hotheaded and wanted to see the woman they believed was their mate, but they weren’t stupid. They wouldn’t win in a battle on my territory.
I thought about how to tell them that Sera wasn’t interested in being their mate. Despite what we once thought was a draw to them on her part, the interest she had in Montgomery hadn’t waned. She would never admit as much out loud, but she’d hung around the clinic every day since we arrived back here. Dr. Drake kept me updated on both her and Montgomery.
Sera sat by his bedside for hours, watching over him.
“This is why I told them, brother.”Chance’s words pushed through my thinking.“This is about Sera.”
I frowned and gave him a quizzical look.
“We should take them to the clinic.”
I shook my head, not thinking that would be the wisest idea. And the last thing I wanted was for an argument to break out while my mate was around. Reese was likely still at the clinic with Sera and Montgomery.
“Trust me, brother.”
I hesitated but eventually nodded.
“She’s at the clinic,” I told my cousins. “We’ll take you to her.”
Christophe’s home was only a few buildings away from the clinic, so I chose to walk them over instead of driving. I glanced over at Chance, who came with us, wondering what this was about. He’d scented something. What did that mean?
“You will not go in there angry and yelling,” I told Ronan and Noah. They both gave me curt nods, yet, as soon as I opened the door, they yelled for Sera.
“Where is she?” Ronan bellowed.
I held up my hand to stay the receptionist behind the desk. Henry came from behind the desk, eyeing the two shifters at my side. I gave him a scratch behind the ears before moving past him to the room where I knew Sera would be.
“What’s going on?” Reese asked after pushing through the closed door.
I wrapped an arm around her, bringing her body flush against mine on instinct.
“Serafina,” Ronan said on a sigh, using her full name, as he pushed through the door, seeing Sera in the corner of the room.
“Are you hurt? What do you need?” Noah’s voice was filled with concern.
My chest squeezed as I knew the emotions that filled them. I felt the same when I learned that Reese had been kidnapped.
“I-I’m fine,” Sera replied, looking nervously over their shoulders to me.
I started to ask Chance what he’d wanted me to bring them here for but Ronan sniffed at the air. He pivoted sharply to the man in the bed. Noah had a nearly identical reaction, both men staring at an unconscious Montgomery.
That was when I smelled it, too. I turned to Chance.
“You smell it now too?”
