I shot him a middle finger. He’d been calling it that ever since I got it done.
“Anyway, I hear those things are reversible.”
I stared at my brother. “What the hell are you doing looking up information on vasectomies?”
Micah was happily married and had just had his first child with his wife, Jodi, nine months earlier. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were working on baby number two already.
“I wasn’t,” he replied. “A client of mine had one and then got it reversed years later. His wife got pregnant with twins soon after.”
I rolled my eyes. “Thanks for the information.” Like it wasn’t anything I didn’t already know.
“Welcome.”
We stopped at my truck, next to which Micah had parked.
“I figured any man willing to go to that length over his wife isn’t ready for a divorce.” He peered at me expectantly. “Speaking of, I gave you some time to think about it. Are you certain you want me to dive into your wife’s financial records?”
I swallowed.
I’d made the request months ago, when Savannah told me she wanted the divorce for her grandmother’s inheritance. Until then, Micah hadn’t done a deep dive into her accounts. I thought about what giving Micah the greenlight on his question would mean.
Did I trust Savannah?
“Yeah,” I answered. “Don’t fucking look at me like that,” I said after Micah peered at me out of the corner of his eyes.
He chuckled. “Whatever. Also, don’t you think it’s about time you brought Savannah and your stepson around the rest of us?”
My chest swelled at the mentioning of Aiden as my stepson. I supposed technically, he was, but no one had ever said it out loud.
“He asked to meet you all,” I said, recalling the day I picked him up from his friend’s house. “It’s probably time for that to happen, formally.”
Aiden had technically met them that night at The Rustic, but he’d been half-asleep. He barely even remembered that night.
“How about this weekend? Gabe and Lena will be back in town for wedding planning. We’ll grill out in the backyard.”
I nodded, agreeing. One of the best things about my home state was that, even though it was early November, the weather was still perfect in the afternoons for outdoor activities.
In my military career, I’d lived or was stationed in countries worldwide, but nothing beat the Lone Star State, in myleasthumble opinion.
“We’ll be there,” I said, knowing Savannah had weekends off. “But not until afternoon. Aiden plays in a soccer tournament this Saturday morning.”
Micah gave me a look. “Did I say stepson?” He shook his head. “That’s more like, dad shit. See ya Saturday.” He climbed behind the wheel of his truck.
Dad.
The word vibrated around my brain while I drove back home. I hadn't experienced the feeling that one word elicited in years. It was a combination of pride, joy, and fear.
A lump worked its way up my throat. Maybe it was time to talk to Savannah about staying for the long haul. And therefore, making me Aiden’s father, legally.
Aside from when I was in the cockpit, nothing felt more right than that thought.
CHAPTER20
Ace
“And you said Joel isn’t going to be there, right?” Savannah asked as she came down the stairs from changing.
It was a few days after the confrontation with Tricia had gone down, and I was finally taking Savannah and Aiden over to Micah’s for an afternoon with the family.
