With a deep inhale, I pulled myself up and grabbed a washcloth before heading back out to the bedroom. I didn’t say anything as I cleaned both our bodies and climbed back into bed.
Savannah remained quiet as well, but I could feel her unease. She wanted to talk, but I wasn’t ready for any of it.
“Sleep,” I mumbled, wrapping my arm around her from behind. I made sure to keep our bodies separated while still holding onto her.
I fell into a restless sleep.
CHAPTER13
Ace
I followed the smell of frying bacon down from the bedroom into the kitchen. It was a few days after the Air Force Ball and rarely had a night passed that I didn’t find myself inside of Savannah. That is, the nights when I was home from work.
The more I touched, felt, and was inside of her, the more I wanted to be.
Which felt like the opposite of what should’ve been happening.
At least I had the entire day off. Savannah and Aiden would be at work and school, and I could do whatever I wanted.
I planned to head over to Joel’s to spend the day riding my horse and helping out on the ranch.
“Morning,” Savannah hummed as she turned from the stove.
I did my best to ignore the way my stomach filled with warmth from the sight of her smile.
“‘Mornin’,” I returned with a nod.
“I hope you’re hungry. Chocolate chip pancakes, bacon, and eggs.”
“Not spaghetti?” I teased, somehow falling into an easy banter, despite my desire to keep my emotional distance.
She turned and winked at me over her shoulder.
Dammit. There went those fucking butterflies again.
“I never forced you to eat spaghetti for breakfast.”
“No. You just made me take leftovers every day,” I replied.
She waved her hand, holding the spatula in the air. “You complain, but you secretly loved my spaghetti.”
“I like spaghetti!” Aiden said as he ran into the kitchen.
“I know you do, buddy,” Savannah said. “Come here. Smell check.” She waved him over with her hand.
Aiden groaned. “Really? I’m not a little kid.”
I watched with a grin as Savannah folded her arms and lifted her eyebrow, giving him a stern face. Aiden groaned again but marched over to Savannah. She bent low and sniffed behind his ears.
“Open,” she ordered.
Aiden opened his mouth wide.
“Blow.”
He blew out a breath.
“Mm. Minty fresh. You passed the sniff test. Good job. Go get your plate.”
