“They’re back home. A few of my guys are with them.”

“I need to see them.” I turned to head out the door, no longer concerned about my cousins.

“Ace, wait,” Micah called. “Savannah and Aiden are safe. But you need to hear this.” Micah circled me, stopping me from exiting.

“What?”

“I told you I would see you again soon, cousin,” Chael spoke.

“Is this about Reyes?” I looked between the three of them.

“Did he say anything to you?” Chael asked, ignoring my question.

“Hard to speak with a broken jaw.” I folded my arms across my chest.

Chael’s face turned grim.

“What the hell is going on?” I demanded. “Was Reyes into something?”

Micah shook his head. “Remember when I said this might go deeper than any of us knew?”

I nodded.

“This isn’t about Reyes,” Chael said. “He was low-hanging fruit in a very complex and deeply rooted tree.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Flores?” Aiden’s biological father.

“The Senator,” Chael said to Chance.

Chance’s facial expression remained impassive, but his hazel eyes darkened.

“He’s Aiden’s biological father,” I said. “We need to handle him so he doesn’t come after my son again.”

Chael stepped forward. “Leave this to us, cousin.”

“He’s my son.”

“You have my word. Senator Flores will not so much as touch a hair on Aiden’s head. But you can’t be involved.” Chael peered over at Micah. “Neither of you can. This goes beyond the world you know.”

His words sucked all of the air out of the room. A cold, dreadful warning filled his statement.

“We will speak with your father.” Chael placed a hand on my shoulder. “Go home to your family. We’ll take it from here.”

The reminder of my family waiting for me at the house doused the embers of my mounting curiosity. Chael often held us at arm’s length to protect his family’s secrets from the world.

I didn’t understand it entirely, but knew that there were layers to it.

“You will tell me if there’s anything I need to know.”

Chael and Chance exchanged a look.

“This is my fucking family,” I growled.

“They are safe,” Chael said. “And they’ll remain that way.”

I nodded and turned to leave. While I had more questions, they would have to wait for another time. Reyes was dead, which was satisfying enough, for now. I needed to check on my wife and son.
