I had pushed the thought aside when she first told me because I was still full of anger and bitterness. But months later, it was apparent she still wanted money.
That day in the park, when I asked her to forget about the divorce, she hesitated. I blamed myself, my lifestyle, and my career for why she didn’t say yes. But that was a fucking lie.
Savannah was still after money.
“I need to go home.”
“Ace,” Micah called.
“What?” I asked, still heading toward the door with Micah behind me.
“Don’t get all hotheaded. There might be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this.”
“Yeah?” I asked, turning to face him. “And in your career, have you ever come across a good reason that someone is withdrawing that kind of cash?”
He frowned. “No.”
“That’s what I thought.”
I yanked the door open, feeling a wave of anger I thought had been quelled. For months, I thought that Savannah and I were rebuilding what we had lost. And there she was, keeping secrets from me.
Not any fucking more.
CHAPTER26
Savannah
I hadn’t heard from Vincent Reyes since he called me earlier. But I made my decision. As soon as I got home and put Aiden to bed, I was going to tell Ace the truth. Come clean.
It made me sick to my stomach to think of keeping something from him, considering how far we had come in the past few months. Besides that, maybe we could talk to Micah, who was a PI and had connections from his time in law enforcement.
Perhaps there was something that we could come up with to keep Aiden safe from Reyes.
I snapped off my blue latex gloves and tossed them in the hazardous material wastebasket before entering the examination room.
“I’m calling it quits for the day, Reese,” I told her.
She lifted her head and smiled. “Sounds good. Hey,” she called, “you know we’re open the morning of Thanksgiving, right?”
I smiled. “Dr. Pierce informed us at the last staff meeting. I’ll be here.”
She nodded. “Me too. Not like I have any other plans,” she mumbled.
“Why don’t you come over?” I suggested. Ace and I hadn’t discussed our Thanksgiving Day plans at all, but I hated the forlorn note in Reese’s voice.
She waved me off. “I couldn’t impose on your family like that.”
“You can.” I laughed. “Wait. What I mean is, it’s not an imposition. Ace and Aiden will probably have their faces stuck in front of a football game all day, anyway. I’ll need the company.”
“Aiden likes football?” she asked with her brown eyes going wide.
I shook my head. “Aceloves football. Aiden loves whatever Ace does. He’s like his mini-shadow.”
“That’s so adorable,” she swooned, then sighed.
A longing expression covered her face.
“Say you’ll come,” I urged.
