My gut twisted, but I didn’t look away from any of them. I refused to stand there and lie to their faces. I wasn’t hiding a damned thing when it came to Jocelyn. At least, not the important stuff.

“Corey doesn’t know,” I confessed.

“Not yet,” Carter commented.

It burned my insides to know that with each day that passed, I fell deeper for Jocelyn, and it felt like a piece of me was a liar because my best friend didn’t know.

“He’s still not answering the damn phone. I’m going to tell him face to face.”

“When?” Eric asked.

“When I have the time. I have to head out to go do some witness interviews.”

“Does the Captain know, or do we need to cover for you?” Carter asked, his face turning serious again.

“He knows.” I’d spoken with Waverly that morning. After telling him everything I’d found out about Rogers and the fact that Rogers went on a leave of absence after that night, then disappeared, he told me he would allow me all the room I needed to investigate this case thoroughly.

“You need someone to go with you?”

I shook my head at Emanuel’s question. “I’m just conducting a few witness interviews at their homes. I don’t want to alarm them or put anyone off. I’ll keep you all updated on what I find out.”

“Tell Jocelyn we said hello,” Emanuel quipped.

I tossed him the middle finger over my shoulder, and all three of them broke out into laughter. Grinning, I kept walking, knowing I was in for more teasing than even I could imagine. I gave Carter and Eric especially, a ton of shit when they fell in love. I’d always argued that relationships weren’t worth the trouble. The truth was my own fear of not measuring up. Of falling for someone, and somehow failing them when she needed me the most. Like I’d done with my mother.

But this relationship with Jocelyn had me wondering if I could be there. I already knew I would do everything in my power to not let her down.

Chapter 22

Jocelyn

“I cannot believeyou have me up this early playing video games,” I griped as Don plopped down on my couch next to me.

“We’ve got thirty minutes until the gym opens, and you’ve wanted to try this new game.” He wiggled his eyebrows, looking over at me. “It’s either video games, or I can take you back to bed, and we can finish where we left off.”

“No.” I shook my head and snatched the game controller from him. “With you, we’d end up spending all day in bed, and we still have work to do on this case after the gym.”

It was a Saturday, and Don and I had plans to be one of the first ones at his gym to meet with a friend of mine from the police department, who looked up some information for me on Rogers.

He shrugged. “Suit yourself.”

“What is this game anyway?”

“The new one I told you about.”

“Right, the zombie apocalypse one. Let’s do this.”

“Remember, we’re a team in this game,” he said as if I needed reminding.

Impatiently, I waited for the game to start up. We went through the rules and who was playing which character and whatnot.

“Shit, yeah!” I cheered minutes later after successfully gunning down three of the zombies.

“Nice, now turn left down that street,” Don instructed as he pointed his character in the direction. “I’ve got a feeling about it.”

After a side-eye, I directed my character in the opposite direction.

“What are you doing?”
