Jocelyn rolled her eyes. “Oh, my goodness, tell me about it. I used to get those calls at least once a day. Such a pain.”

“Let’s head out,” I said, still looking around to see if anyone appeared suspicious or out of the ordinary. Not until Jocelyn was in the passenger seat of my truck and I was behind the steering wheel did I release a breath.

“Hey, don’t let those scammers get to you.” She pressed her palm into my thigh. Even though the jeans I wore prevented our skin from touching, I still felt the heat of her touch cruise through my body.

I covered her hand with my own, needing that closeness to calm the nerves rattling around inside me.

“Did that dumbass from the other day ever come back to your office?” I asked as I drove to her place.

Feeling her eyes on me, I glanced over to see her giving me a confused expression.

“Oh, him,” she said as it sunk in who I was referring to.

How frequently did assholes run up on her in her office like that?

“Nah, he hasn’t returned.”

“Would you tell me if he did?”

She granted me a sideways grin. “Maybe.”

I gritted my teeth. While she meant the answer to be playful, it harkened me back to the call I’d received while at the theater.

“You should.”

“Why’s that?” She asked. “He was nothing more than a nuisance. Pierce is pissed that I provided his wife the ammunition she needed to follow through with the divorce. She’d been planning it for a while. Turns out, they had a solid prenuptial agreement in place, but if she caught him being unfaithful, she’d walk away with half of his assets. Gloria says that she only agreed to be a stay-at-home mother if he signed the prenup. Pierce thought he was intelligent enough to outsmart her, and she’d never be the wiser. His hubris got the better of him. He never thought Gloria would hire a PI.”

That brought a grin to my face. “Sounds like he’s getting what he deserved.”

“That and then some. So, yeah, he’s a little upset about it. No worries. I can handle myself.”

“What if you can’t?”

Angling her head sideways, she looked at me with a wrinkle between her brows. “Can’t what?”

“Handle yourself? What if things get too complicated or dangerous for you to handle?”

“They won’t. Besides, I’m not an idiot. My office has a security system equipped with cameras and instant communication to my emergency contacts.”

“Who’re your contacts?”

She hesitated.

“Who’re your contacts, Jocelyn?” I asked, grilling her.

“Right now only Corey because I haven’t taken him off and I had a few officers I used to work with.”

“Why aren’t they still on your contact list?”

“Because two retired and one moved an hour outside of the city to work for a different department. It’s no big deal.”

“You need an emergency contact list.”

With a shake of her head, she said, “It’s no big deal. I rarely have those types of emergencies. I’ll update my list soon or have Hallease do it. She’s pretty decent with tech stuff.”

“She’s a hacker?”

“Not quite. She’s good, but her powers are limited.” She grinned, and the tightness in my chest eased. Even though my mind continued to conjure up dangerous scenarios involving the call I’d gotten and possible harmful clients of hers, I felt lighter by her smile.
