I shot my gaze to the clock mounted on the wall across from me. Considering the time was inching closer to six o’clock, no one should’ve been in the office.
“Where is she?”
“You can’t go in there.”
The shrilled tone Vince’s voice took on is what alarmed me most. Standing, I hurried out of my office and started down the hallway to his desk, but halfway down, I stopped short.
“Are you Syd?” A short woman with a pissed off expression asked.
“Who are you?” I questioned, noticing she began tying her brightly colored unit into a ponytail.
“I’m the chick that’s about to beat your ass,” she said, looking me in the eye.
Sizing her up, I moved into my defensive stance without thinking about it. “I don’t know what the hell your issue with me is, but I bet you won’t,” I said.
“Syd, I can call the police,” Vince said, moving in between the two of us.
“Nah, we don’t need the police, but you’re lucky as hell you’ve got all these medical supplies in here, because she’s going to need them,” this woman shouted.
“Who the hell are you to come into my business and threaten me? Vince, call the police.”
“You got him all fucked up over you. Got us jumping out of planes and shit while he should be training for this fight.”
“Luke?” I asked, confused. “Is he with you?”
I looked over her head but saw nothing and no one.
“Does it look like he’s with me? He’s in Vander City, probably ready to drag race or some dumb shit.”
I gasped. “He can’t do that. He could get hurt.” My heart hammered in my chest at the idea of Luke putting himself in that kind of danger.
“Like you care,” she yelled, trying to move past Vince.
Blinking, I finally realized who this crazy chick was. “Skittles?”
She narrowed her eyes. “He told you about me, huh?”
“Is he all right?” I asked, ignoring her question. “Is he taking care of himself?” I had to push aside the strangle hold of my jealousy. I hated that this woman knew more about Luke’s whereabouts at the moment than I did.
She paused and cocked her head sideways. “You care?”
“Of course, I care.” I waved my hand in the air. “If you want to go at it, fine, but let me know how he’s doing first. He didn’t go to Williamsport with his brother? Is he okay? He’s not by himself, is he?”
I wanted to know that more than anything. It pained me to think of him as hurting and alone.
She took a step back and watched me silently for a heartbeat. “He’s with his crew,” she said before glaring at me for another moment and turning to head out of the office.
I stood there for I don’t know how long, waiting for her to come back. When it became apparent she wasn’t, I looked at Vince. He looked as confused as I felt. Though, a part of me felt relief in knowing Luke wasn’t out there by himself.

Luke
“Whoop,” I yelled as I passed Deacon on his left, inside the dirt track we raced around.
“Motherfucker,” he yelled to my back.
