I opened my mouth, allowing him to feed me, but my body was still tense. It’d been a long time since I allowed anyone accept my doctor to touch me there. Apparently, he was making sure I got used to it.
“Does this make you uncomfortable?”
I nodded as I swallowed the pancakes.
“Do you want me to stop?”
Sighing, I laid my head back against his shoulder. “No.”
“Good.”
I grinned and placed a kiss to his jawline.
“You like the grape juice, huh?” I asked as he refilled his glass for the second time.
“I do especially since you kept the pulp in it. Same when you make orange juice.”
“Pulp is the only way.”
He kissed my cheek in agreement before taking a sip of the tart juice.
I closed my eyes, sighing and feeling grateful that I got to spend the day just like this.
Chapter Sixteen
Grace
Looking down at my cell phone at the text message I just received, I frowned. It was only a confirmation text for my appointment the following week, but that damn fear which always came up regarding this particular appointment rose.
“What’s that all about?”
I lifted my gaze to see Jacob coming toward me, a frown on his own face, as if my displeasure somehow caused his.
I took the cup of coffee he offered. “Thank you.” Shrugging, I took a sip. “Just not looking forward to the staff meeting this morning.”
Jacob lifted an eyebrow, watching me carefully.
“You know about the consulting firm, right?” I asked because his gaze was becoming too unraveling to my nerves.
“I heard about it.”
He said it as if it were no big deal to him.Typical.
“I mean, you don’t have much to worry about anyway,” I continued as we proceeded down the hall toward the large staff room where much of the surgical staff was to be introduced to the new consultants. “You have one of the best rated outcomes for your surgeries. Probably because you barely let any of your residents touch anything in the OR,” I giggled, nudging his side with my elbow.
He glared down at me, but a tiny smile played at his lips.
“Thank you,” I said, passing through the door he held open for me.
“Oh, thank you, Dr. Reynolds,” another feminine voice purred behind me.
I immediately rolled my eyes at the sound of Suzanne’s voice. I wasn’t a jealous woman, I swear I wasn’t. Even with boyfriends of mine in the past, I didn’t think much of other women trying to flirt with them because if they were easily able to fall into that trap, then the guy wasn’t meant for me. But that logic did not seem to apply when I glared at Suzanne as she smiled, staring up into Jacob’s face, standing closer than I deemed appropriate.
I had to remind myself that we were at work and yanking her away from him by her hair wouldn’t be looked upon as a good thing.
Jacob merely nodded in Suzanne’s direction and stepped past her, placing his hand at the small of my back to guide us in the direction of two empty seats in the auditorium-style room.
It didn’t bother me one bit that Jacob’s and my relationship was becoming more and more apparent to our co-workers. We were never in anyone’s face about it, and of course, kept it professional while at work. I’d even convinced Jacob that he couldn't schedule me for every single one of his surgeries. Though, I assisted with many of his surgeries, I still worked with other surgeons, and he other nurses.
