Me:He’s been told.

My Destiny:I’m sure he has … You were pretty okay out there.

I lifted an eyebrow.

Me:Pretty okay?

My Destiny:I can’t compliment you too much. Your ego can barely fit through the door as is.

“What’re you reading?”

I glanced up, seeing Kelvin staring at me, smirking. He must’ve heard the laugh I just let out.

“Mind your damn business,” I grunted, pushing past him to one of the private showers.

Me:I’m sure you can manage my ego just fine, Destiny.

I waited for her response, which had been rather immediate during this exchange. When two and then three minutes passed, I finally placed my phone along with the rest of my stuff on the bench and pulled the door open to shower.

After I got out and dried off, I checked my phone again, and still, there was no response. Frowning, I scrolled back through our conversation. I reasoned it’d been my last response that’d made her stiffen up, either that or she was preoccupied with something or someone. I inhaled deeply at the urge to kill at the thought of someone else taking her time while I was out of town doing my damn job. As much as I hated to admit it, Leonard Riggs’ words began to creep back into my mind.

Destiny and I had talked about our pasts a little, but she’d conveniently skipped over the part where she was married. She had mentioned being married before on one of the podcasts but hadn’t given much detail.

“Hey, you hanging out tonight?” Kelvin questioned as we made our way through the double doors of the stadium. We were in the Bay Area and knew of plenty of places that were more than happy to host us for a night on the town.

I shook my head. “Not tonight. Got plans already.”

Kelvin and I slapped hands and fist bumped before parting ways. I took a car back to the hotel. I had plans that night indeed.

Chapter Eleven

Destiny

“It’ll be a walk in the park. Just go in, get the information you need, and get out. That’s all,” I murmured to myself as I stood in front of the high rise building in downtown Williamsport. This was the day Dawn was able to schedule my appointment with Darryl. I had her tell his office it was in reference to one of his athletes. According to her, the appointment was made without any problems.

“Okay,” I sighed out and released one of my hands from the briefcase I held in front of me, in order to reach for the door handle. I crossed the threshold of the building’s door, stepping onto the dark marble flooring inside. The security guard from behind the booth looked up when the noise of my heels on the marble sounded.

“Destiny McDonald, here for an appointment with Darryl Wright,” I rushed out before I lost my nerve.

“Just one second.” He looked down at something in front of him before nodding. “Here you are. I just need to see some I.D., please.”

Removing my license from my wallet, I showed the guard. He nodded and handed me a visitor’s pass with my name on it and directed me to the elevators that would take me to the tenth floor. I tapped my foot the entire elevator ride up, nervous energy coursing through my body. When the doors parted, I hesitated for one moment, wondering if I was seriously doing this. Was it even worth it? Maybe Riggs had made the whole thing up to get a rise out of me and here I was falling for it.

I stepped off the elevator, looking to my left and my right, seeing glass doorways on either side. The office of Darryl Wright Sports Inc., were to my left. I forced myself to push through my self-doubt. The worst that could happen is that I wasted a few hours of a work day, right?

“Hi, I’m Destiny McDonald in to see … Darr— er, Mr. Wright.” I smiled at the cute blonde who sat behind the receptionist’s desk.

“Um, let me see, oh yes. Mr. Wright will be out in just a moment. Can I get you any coffee, tea, or water?”

“A water would be great.”

“I’ll be right back,” she answered, smiling and standing to head out of the receptionist area, rounding the corner that look like it led to a hallway. Less than a minute later, she appeared with a bottle of cold water.

“Thank you.” I opened the bottle and took a long sip to satisfy my parched throat.

“It’ll just be another minute. Mr. Wright is with a client.”

I nodded and moved to the row of chairs directly facing her desk to sit down, but before I could even pull out my phone to check for any missed calls or messages, male laughter filled the hallway. My insides tightened at hearing the sound of Darryl’s laughter for the first time in over six years. I uncrossed my legs and stood just as he reached the point of the hallway that opened up to the waiting area of his office.
