“Don’t fucking tell me to calm down! She could’ve been fucking hurt. Who the hell is behind this? What the hell was she doing there in the first place?” I demanded.

“Looking at one of the units. She was with her real estate agent.”

That answer only added fuel to my anger. Not only had I been called out of a meeting to be told not one, but two Townsend Real Estate properties had been burglarized, but that Kayla,my Kayla, had been at one of the locations when it happened.

“Someone’s going to lose their fucking head,” I growled as I passed Brutus, walking straight to the police captain’s office.

As soon as my security learned of the attempted robberies, they were on the phone with the police commissioner who happened to be a friend of my father’s.

“Mr. Townsend.”

I glanced around his office. “Kay,” I blurted out, grabbing her in my arms.

She fell into my hug, burying her head into my shoulder. I felt her trembling body mold into my arms. “It’s okay,” I whispered into her ear, consoling her.I’m going to kill whoever is behind this.

“Were you hurt?” I questioned, pulling back and cupping her chin, my eyes roving over her face and body, examining her for any bruising.

She shook her head. “No, I’m fine.” She inhaled deeply and gave me a crooked smile. But I could see the fear in her eyes. I pressed a kiss to her forehead and wrapped my arm around her waist, before turning to the captain.

“Hurt? She damn near castrated one of guy’s that tried rob them.”

I glanced over at the police captain who’d had the nerve to fucking chuckle, before I returned my gaze to Kay.

She shrugged. “He pissed me off,” she stated, a smirk touching her lips.

I pressed a kiss to her lips. “That’s my girl.” I moved closer to her ear so only she could hear my next statement. “Though we’re going to talk about what you were doing there in the first place.”

I moved back to turn and give my attention to the police captain.

“Who was it?” My voice was eerily calm, overshadowing the anger rolling around in my body.

“Thanks to Miss Reyes here, we have one of the men in custody—”

“I need to see him.”

A scowl covered my face when the captain began shaking his head. “I’m sorry, that’s just not possible. We have our best detectives on the case—”

I turned from the captain, feeling my anger rise. I didn’t want Kay seeing me get this pissed off. “Brutus, have Patrick take Kay and Ms. …” I paused, looking to the woman who I knew was Kay’s realtor.

“McDaniels,” she answered.

“Ms. McDaniels home.” I moved closer to Brutus so only he could hear me. “He is not to let Kay out of his sight. Understood?”

Brutus nodded and left.

“Go ahead. I’ll be in later,” I told Kay in the most soothing voice I could muster in the moment.

“You’re not coming?”

“Not yet. I need to discuss some things with the captain first.”

She gave me a wary look but eventually followed Darla out of the captain’s office. I watched for another few seconds until she disappeared around the corner toward the front entrance.

“You may have rules to follow, Captain, but this—”

“Not rules, Mr. Townsend, the law. We have to follow the law. I cannot have a civilian questioning a suspect in an ongoing criminal investigation. We will do everything in our ability to bring the other person behind this break-in to justice.”

I glared at the captain. “What’s his name?”
