“I don’t want to argue about it either,” Thomas said, giving a little shrug. “But I agree with your mom. You need to deal with your grief instead of hiding from it.”

“Noted.”

Rhys sprinkled a generous amount of pepper on the tomatoes and covered them with a second slice of bread. He finished making his own sandwich, and then he carried their plates over to the table, and Thomas followed along with their drinks and the bag of chips. Another long silence spun out between them, crowded with all the things Thomas wanted to say but couldn’t.

“Does that mean I’m not getting any smooches even as your fake boyfriend?” he asked at last, wanting to break the tense mood.

Rhys snorted and elbowed Thomas hard enough to make him rock in his chair. “Smartass.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“We’ll see,” Rhys said, and Thomas smiled.

“We’ll see” wasn’t a yes, but it wasn’t a no either, and Thomas intended to enjoy the perks of being Rhys’s fake boyfriend as long as he could.
