I didn't think that was likely, given her attitude, but of course I couldn’t say that.
Kathy and Anna-Lise came into the room carrying trays of food which they laid on the dining table. The women made a great team. They worked together seamlessly, passing out plates and putting food on them. In a few minutes, we were scattered around the room eating spare ribs, jerked chicken, stir-fried vegetables and fried rice.
Once dinner was over, the women worked in the same systematic manner and cleaned things up quickly while the men sat in the living room talking sports. I was comfortable and strangely content sharing this moment with this group of friends who had long-standing history.
My mood changed as I thought about Gina and how we came to be here. We'd left the gym when Garth called with an invitation for us to come and have dinner with them. After going to the cottage to shower, we came straight here.
I analyzed my time on the island and this space, in particular. It was almost as if the longer I sat here, the more conscious I became that what I had with Gina didn't have a name.
If I didn't care to define it, maybe she would be content to drift with me as long as I was game. All of a sudden, I was acutely conscious that I wanted something definitive, but had no idea if Gina wanted the same thing.
Chapter 15
Gina
KOFI WAS LIKE COMFORTfood. Addictive. Delicious. Filling. But comfort food had never been this good, nor had it ever been this delightful. I inhaled and savored him, wishing we could stay as we were for the rest of the day.
It was unheard of for me to be making love with anybody on a Sunday afternoon, but here we were, slick with sweat and too lazy to move. Somewhere between when we first became intimate and the present moment, I'd lost my inhibition and every shred of modesty.
I liked being naked with his man who made me feel more desirable every day. Sex with him wasn't all about the physical. There was something connecting us on an emotional level. It scared me and I refused to put a name to it.
He didn't shower me with compliments, but with a look Kofi make me more confident, as if he were telegraphing that trait to me—which was ridiculous, but still ...
"We need to get moving if we don't want to be late," he said.
"Do we have to?" I asked with a trace of a whine in my tone.
"You promised Garth."
I let out a sigh. "Backside."
Kofi laughed, hugging me to him. "What does that mean?"
"Nothing at all, just an expression of annoyance."
"You need to teach me more of this Patois."
