Cupping my cheek, he said, "No love, I'm saying you're special."
I walked to the sofa and sank on the seat, thinking.
Kofi picked up the glasses off the table and took them to the kitchen. I didn't hear when he came back into the room as I had gone to stand by the window. It was dark and peaceful outside. A lone dwarf mango tree stood on the lawn and the chirping of crickets filled the night air.
Kofi slid both arms around me and kissed my neck.
I turned and slid my hands up his chest. "Are you sure you didn't master psychiatry as part of your course?"
"Well, psychological principles are used in treating many clinical disorders. There's a generous helping of medicine, psychology and physiology wrapped up in sports medicine."
"I'll take that as a yes."
We both laughed and after hugging him tight, I went on tiptoes and kissed Kofi on the lips.
"So are you going to put some thought into my suggestions?"
I didn't want to think about my mother or my problems, but I nodded. "Yes, it's way past time I did."
"And one more thing," Kofi said, tapping my chin.
"What?"
Staring into my eyes, he whispered, "I love you."
My heart swelled to bursting point. I didn’t know what to do with the sensation, so I closed my eyes until the feeling passed. I looked up at Kofi, studying his features. "You know what?"
"No, but I am sure you're going to tell me in a second."
"Yeah, you got that right." I took his face between my hands. "Come with me and let me show you how I feel about you."
The disappointment in his gaze made me look away, but I wasn't ready to say the words he'd used so freely to me moments ago.
