Puzzled, I asked, "Why d'you want to know that?"

"I'm interested in everything that has anything to do with you."

As hard as I tried to hide it, my wide smile gave away my feelings. "Really?"

"You know by now that I say what I think." He chewed a mouthful of vegetables, then raised his eyebrows. "So what is he like?"

I put down my cutlery and thought about it. "Daddy is tall and um, bulky like you. He's easygoing and doesn't expect me to live my life to please him."

My gaze sharpened because I hoped Kofi hadn't caught my slip-up.

His expression didn't change, but his words told me he'd been paying attention. "And your mother does?"

"I didn't say that."

Kofi covered my hand with his. "You should stop running."

I tried pulling my hand away, but he wouldn't let me.

"Who said I was running?"

Smiling faintly, he said, "You're a bright woman."

"What does that have to do with anything?"

His tone was gentle when he said, "Now you're being difficult because you don't like what I said."

"No, I'm not." I shrugged and acted as if he hadn't hit a nerve. "I don't know why you'd assume that."

"You're trying to stonewall me and it means something."

Forcing laugher, I shook my head. "You couldn't be more wrong."

He squeezed my hand, which still lay under his. "Prove me wrong. Come to Jamaica with me."

The air conditioner went ice-cold and so did my blood.

"What? When did that happen? Why are you going?" I asked.

Withdrawing his hand, Kofi chuckled. "If you ask one question at a time, I might be able to answer."

I gave him my full attention. "So, when did you decide?"

"I've been thinking about it for the last couple of days."

"And you're really going?"

His dark eyes conveyed his amusement as he replied, "I'm ninety per cent sure. The idea appeals to me. It would be a new adventure."

"You're big on adventure?"

"I'm all in when it comes to living."

"When would you be going?" Inexplicably, my heart raced as I waited for his answer.

"In three weeks."

"Where would you stay?"
