His words sounded like an invitation.
Since I didn't want my mind running off and getting me into trouble, I picked up my purse and got to my feet before Kofi reached my chair.
He frowned a little, looking at me as if he'd discovered something important.
I didn't ask what was wrong because I knew.
Kofi seemed to be the perfect gentleman, getting the door for me and helping with my seat, but there was no way I was going to let him lay a hand on me again. My nerve endings were likely to go into overdrive and he’d doubt my sanity if I launched myself at him, begging him to kiss me.
Chapter 5
Kofi
MY TONGUE WAS STILLin Gina's mouth when Kemar woke me by clearing his throat.
"Are you with me, man?" His ever-ready grin flashed at me from the sofa where he slouched with a bag of banana chips resting on his stomach.
"Yes, sorry, my mind drifted for a second."
"More like five minutes," he said, in his lilting Jamaican accent. "I've been talking to myself that long."
I didn't argue the point because I'd been with Gina for all of that time. In my mind. When I took her home last night, kissing her was the last thing I intended to do. It was our first real date and I didn't want to chase her off. Gina represented different things to me—the first hint of dawn, a refreshing breeze, and the first swallow of water that quenched a raging thirst.
We were standing in front of her house when I took her keys and opened the door. When it swung inward, I realized how close we were standing, but since Gina didn't move, I didn't either. She took a breath as if she wanted to say something, but stopped when her eyes met mine. She didn't come up with any words, but the tip of her tongue came out to wet her lips.
Her action tempted me like nothing she'd ever done before. I couldn't make myself move, other than to cover her plump lips with mine. Her soft cry had me pulling her closer as my tongue met hers for the first time. My hands went to her waist and I deepened our kiss as she pressed close to me. Her fingers spread on my chest, then crept up to circle my head. We stood like that, giving and taking from each other for a while before my pants got uncomfortably tight. I didn't want her to think I expected anything more from her, so I ended our kiss and cupped her cheek with one hand.
Her lipstick was smudged and her eyes glazed. After touching my lips to her forehead, I stepped back. "We'll talk tomorrow."
She nodded and whisked her hair behind her ears. "Yeah."
I waited for her to lock up before I sat in the car, trying not to overthink the fact that she meant more to me with each day that passed. I also didn't want to dig deeper to understand what significance our actions held for the future.
Kemar prodded my leg with his sneaker. "I'd like to know which woman has your mind coming and going like this."
I sat up and looked at the television where a football match was in progress. "Why do you think it has to do with a woman?"
