"No, I didn't," Kofi said. "You just assumed I work there."
"You don't?"
He didn't answer immediately and as a smattering of applause rose around us, I leaned in and waited to hear what he'd say. I was sure my skin was going red—something that disgusted me. When I thought about the times I'd commanded him to help me ...
"Not exactly."
I sighed. "Will you tell me any time this year what you do atWorkout Boost?"
His laughter surprised me and I was again dazzled by his perfect teeth.
" ... asked me to assess the equipment as well as the programs he's offering clients."
"Sorry?"
This time, Kofi grinned. "You must have given your teachers a hard time when you were in school."
My response came before could stop it. "Whatever."
"You ask me what I do, and I am trying to explain, but because you do not pay attention you are now in a snit. Then, you choose to be rude to me."
For a couple of seconds I thought he was serious, but the light in his eyes and his twitching lips gave away his amusement.
"You're right. I'm sorry, but I still think you owe me an apology."
One of his eyebrows went up. "Why?"
"You misled me."
Arms folded across his chest, he asked, "How did I do that?"
"Well, uh, you never said ... " When I thought about how silly I'd sound, I changed what I was going to say. "Maybe I assumed some things."
"You assumed a lot of things."
I cut my eyes at him, but it only amused him because he grinned again.
"What’s that for?" he asked.
"'Cause I still believe you gave me the wrong impression."
"Let's agree that you took an idea and ran off with it."
His expressionless face that was at odds with his words made me laugh. "You never once acted like you didn't belong there, so naturally I thought ... by the way, what exactly is your role there?"
I waited until he finished chuckling, and then paid attention while he explained what he did atWorkout Boost.
Hand to my chest, I said, "So while I was bossing you around, you were there in the capacity of a consultant?"
He bit his bottom lip, holding back laughter. I could only imagine what my facial expression conveyed. In one word, I was mortified.
My embarrassment turned to intrigue with his next question.
"Are you seeing someone?"
"Are you?" I shot back.
"I believe I asked you first."
