“She came to apologize and tell me that she pulled the video down but she’s gone now. You have nothing to be jealous of. ”

“You’re way too full of yourself. I would have to actually care in order for me to be jealous. This was just us having fun, right? I’m only pissed because you couldn’t be honest with me.”

“I didn’t ask her to come here,” he continues to explain as if it matters to me. “I swear, the two of us are done.”

“You’re not listening to me, Brandon. I don’t care.”

He moves an inch closer.

“There’s only you, Kaya, and I don’t give a fuck who knows it.”

My heart and vagina have teamed up and are kicking my common sense’s butt because I want to believe this man’s words so badly.

“Only me?”

He hangs his head lower and uses his finger to tilt my chin up.

“Only you.” Our faces are so close that he speaks the words basically into my mouth. “I only want to be with you, Kaya. I’m falling in love with you.”

“You’re fucking what?”

Both of us turn our heads toward the familiar voice we just heard. From a distance, it’s clear to see the person staring back at us is in complete shock.

No, no, no.

I wish the ground would swallow me up.

It’s Kyle.

Brick

The atmosphere wastense in the back lobby of the lavish hotel resort. Kyle and I have been best friends since grade school and now we are standing face to face in a heated argument a day after his wedding.

This is fucked up.

Just twenty-four hours ago, I was standing up for him, watching him commit to spending the rest of his life with the woman he loves, and all I could think about was how envious I was.

I’d never been in a relationship with a girl who didn’t want something from me after a few months together. In high school, it was the popularity they gained by being with me. In college, it was the hope that they’d end up marrying me. And now that I’m in the NFL, it’s all about the lifestyle I can afford to give them. A part of me never trusted any relationship I was in until now. There’s not a thing that Kaya wants from me, but there’s so much I want to give her.

“I can’t believe you did this!” shouts Kyle. “I thought you were my friend!”

“It’s not like that, man,” I say, trying to explain myself. “Kaya and I really care about each other.”

“Care about each other?” spits Kyle. “Are you fucking my sister, Brick? Are you taking advantage of a girl you’ve known your whole life, you bastard!”

“Kyle, you need to calm down. You’re overreacting,” Kaya says, but I can see she’s growing increasingly upset. This is the very thing she wanted to avoid. The one day she dreaded.

“Was this a drunken mistake or something, Kay, or are you just whoring around on Elijah now?” Kyle says to her and I watch her face drop.

There are too many buzz words that Kyle used in that accusation that enrage me and that’s when I lose it. He can be mad at me all day, but he’s not going to talk to Kaya that way. I don’t give a shit who he is.

“Stop!!!” Kaya cries as I throw the first hit, lunging at Kyle and landing a solid punch to his jaw.

Kyle reels back from the force of the blow, but quickly recovers and returns the favor with a punch of his own.

“You’re a snake!” he howls as we continue to grapple and throw punches back and forth, neither of us willing to back down.

The guests of the resort watch in shock at the scene unfolding before them, and a few of them have their phone cameras up and rolling. This is going to be on the news tonight, but there’s nothing I can do to stop it now. I knew this day would come when I was only eighteen years old. It’s been a long time coming.
