“Yeah, well, they don’t make them like daddy anymore,” I say.

“You got that right,” my uncle says. “Look at that one sitting with your mama. He’s nothing like your daddy.”

Mr. Solomon and my mom are sitting a few tables over, having their breakfast. Her hair is up in a loose bun and she’s wearing a tribal print caftan. For the first time in a long time, she looks relaxed and I wonder if it’s because her son just got married or is it because of something more?

“No, he’s not,” I agree with Uncle Zee.

“I know he’s your boss and all, baby girl, but there’s just something about him and your Mama hooking up that doesn’t sit right with me. She’s my sister and I love her, but what’s wrong is wrong.”

I take a bite of my veggie omelet as I continue to stare at my mom and Mr. Solomon. I can’t believe that I’m agreeing with anything that Uncle Zee says, but I do.

When Kyle and Dena enter the buffet room, the entire room starts clapping. Most people in the resort know that they were married last night and are congratulating the happy couple. Dena locates her parents and heads to their table while Kyle walks over to our table first.

“Morning, Uncle Zee. Glad you’re alive, baby sis.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You were fucked up last night.” He laughs.

“Kyle, stop cursing so loudly,” I reprimand him. “We’re in a public place. And anyway, I was celebrating your joyous union.”

“By yakking in the royal bush garden?”

That snitch.

“Who told you I was throwing up last night?”

“Brick might have mentioned it.”

“Is there anything he doesn’t tell you?” I say flippantly, knowing there’s at least one thing he definitely hasn’t mentioned.

“He just wanted to make sure you were okay this morning.”

“He could have texted and asked me himself.”

“He’s probably distracted with stuff.”

“What stuff?” I scoff.

“His girl flew in this morning. It was a huge deal at the front desk because she wasn’t expected and they were falling all over themselves to roll out the red carpet for her. Small islands like these love it when a celebrity comes, but having two?”

His girl.

“Wait, who did you say came here?”

My stomach rolls.

“That Lisa chick. She rolled into the lobby with a big Louis Vuitton suitcase and a floppy hat. You can’t miss her.”

“So you saw the two of them together?”

“Yeah, in the lobby about ten minutes ago.”

I take a deep breath as my stomach does another somersault.

“You’re still a little green around the gills, huh, Kay?” my brother asks.

“I’m telling you, she needs the hair of the dog,” Uncle Zee adamantly adds.
