“Of course you do. We all do.”

“There are fantasies and then there are tangible dreams.”

“Then what’s your fantasy life look like? Where do you live? Who lives there with you? How do you pay for it?”

Before I can answer, my phone interrupts us. It’s Uncle Zee.

Ugh, what does he want?

“Niece.”

“Hey, Uncle Zee.”

“Where are you, baby girl?”

“I’m picking up a few things for Dena.”

“For who?”

“The bride, Uncle Zee.”

“Oh, right. Listen, Kay. Did you know this hotel is robbing us blind? They’re making me pay for a buffet breakfast I don’t want. I just want some eggs and coffee, but they’re saying I have to pay the buffet price to get it.”

“They serve a buffet breakfast every morning, Uncle Zee. It’s one of the perks that Kyle and Dena loved about the property.”

“So I gotta pay thirty bucks every morning for eggs and coffee?”

“Plus tip.”

“This is some bullshit. I’m complaining to the management to see if I can get something comped.”

“Don’t you dare, Uncle–”

Brick grabs the phone out of my hand and places the conversation on speaker.

“Uncle Zee?”

“Who’s this?”

“It’s Brick Jennings. Kyle’s best man.”

“Oh, the ball player! Hey, man, it’s a genuine pleasure.”

“Same here. Look, I was going to tell everyone at the rehearsal luncheon today that as a gift to the couple, I’m paying for everyone’s stay. So don’t worry about breakfast. Just charge it to the room.”

“Are you crazy?!” I exclaim, tugging with Brick to get my phone back.

“Aww, Brick, now that’s what I’m talking about. That’s a real nice thing you’re doing for my nephew. You’re good people.”

“Could you keep it a secret until lunch, though?” Brick asks. “It’s a surprise.”

“My lips are sealed. Tell Kaya I’ll see her later, then.”

“I can hear you, Uncle Zee. You’re on speaker.” I roll my eyes.

“Yes, sir,” Brick speaks over top of my voice, then ends the call.

“What the hell was that, Brick? My uncle needs to pay for his own damn eggs. He’s such a cheapskate.”
