“Which explains why you don’t mess around when it comes to school.”

“Yeah, she’s sacrificed a lot, so I have to as well.”

“I respect your dedication, but if she’s anything like my mom, I bet she was hoping you’d get the full college experience, the education as well as the fun.”

“I do have fun.”

“You do?”

“I mean… I met Kia here and I have some other friends on the floor.”

“And do you hang with them outside of class? What do you do for fun?”

“Class is fun.”

“Seriously, Teach?”

My tongue.

We have to get out of this room.

“I’ve got a lot going on and me losing the last game didn’t help matters. I need to clear my head before I tackle anything, and I’m asking you to help me do it.”

She looks at me with soft eyes.

“Okay, Freakazoid, let’s get you relaxed first and go ice skating.”

“Yeah?”

“And then we come back here and write.”

“Back here?”

“Kia went home for a few days, so we’ll have the room for ourselves.”

Oh, damn.

Freak

The CGU rink is mainly reserved for the school’s hockey team to practice and play, but on Sunday evenings during winter break it’s open for a free skate to student athletes. There’s a small area in the rink with picnic tables and benches and a booth where you can order food and hot drinks.

“What’s up, Freak?”

“Hey, Mav’.”

I bump into Maverick, a guy who’s a CGU ice hockey phenom and probably one of the best players in the entire Southern Atlantic area.

“I heard you were killing dudes at practice the other day.”

Snitches.

“Just getting them focused.”
