“You can’t start a conversation like that and think that I’m not going to want to see your face and make sure you’re okay. That was a serious bomb you just dropped on me.”

“I know.”

“We’ve been looking for a connection to that asshole for years.”

“Yep.”

“Are you okay?”

“Pretty much.”

“So, how did this magical little blessing fall in your lap?”

“She found me.”

“Wait, what?”

“She called the main house asking for me. Seven took the call. She said that her brother told her if she was ever in any trouble to call me if she couldn’t get a hold of him.”

“The fuck?”

“I know.”

“That bitch ass slices your throat, then uses you as some sort of lifeline call for his sister? That makes zero sense.”

“Yeah, I know.” Especially because I never told my family the entire story.

“Seven knows about this?”

“He knows some of it and I’m telling you like I told him, I don’t want y’all running to tell Dad anything about it.”

“Running to tell?” Knox sounds offended by the insinuation. “When have I ever snitched on the two of you?”

“You and Seven work in the business. You have allegiances to him and the Unc’s that I don’t share.”

“Don’t be dumb. He’s your fucking Father too and there is the same expectation of loyalty from you that there is from anyone else.”

“I’m asking you not to say anything, Knox. If he finds out about this woman, he will do his whole Roman Masterson thing and completely try to take over.”

“To be fair, he’s spent countless resources looking for that fucker. He is very invested in finding him, too.”

“To avenge the mutilation of his son?”

“Uh, hell yeah. You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“He should be more worried about why they were after him in the first place. Just because some time has passed doesn’t mean that he’s safe.”

There’s a brief silence and I know it’s because Knox is holding something back. I can see it in his face.

“What aren’t you saying?” I ask suspiciously.

“Dad already knows who put the hit out on him and he and The Consortium handled that. He’s not in any danger anymore. None of us are.”
