“This is just harder than I thought it would be.”
“In what way?”
“I’m an open book most of the time, but this clandestine relationship we’re in is taking a toll on me. I don’t think I’m built for it.”
“We can tell the whole fucking team if you want. Tomorrow if we need to. It’s not a secret for me.”
“Are you sure?”
“What do you mean, am I sure? I’m not the one still holding onto the whole narrative that we’re college friends. That’s you.”
“Because you’re the one who advised me to keep it quiet. I followed your lead.”
“That was at first.”
“Well, I can’t keep up with you and how all the rules keep changing.”
He places his fork down quietly on the table and anchors his forearms on top of it.
“What rules keep changing?”
“Did you send someone flowers this week?” I blurt out, getting to the crux of what’s really going on.
He raises one of his eyebrows out of curiosity.
“How do you know that?”
“The charge was on your account. Remember, it’s my job to notice out-of-place things like that.”
“Yes, I sent someone flowers.”
“Someone like who?”
“Does it matter?”
“Dodgy much? Yeah, I think it fucking matters.”
“I sent them to Miranda.”
“Finally, the truth.”
“I always tell you the truth.”
“Are you fucking her?”
“What did you just say?!”
“I asked you if you are putting your dick inside the purple people eater’s vagina. Is that a clear enough question for you?”
“You don’t trust me, Bird?”
He has the nerve to look hurt.
“Stop answering my questions with a question.”
He lifts his fork back up and angrily takes a bite of his Mac and cheese. Glaring at me with every chew.
“Did you know the entire team knows you were sleeping with her?” I ask him.
