“Have you been watchingThe Crownagain?”

“I just need another surgery by the right surgeon and I’ll be good as new.”

“Which I told you I’d pay for.”

“Stop trying to give me all your money, Richie Rich. You’re going to need it when you can’t play ball anymore.”

“I could stop playing ball tomorrow and still have enough money to pay for your surgery.”

“Okay, now that was obnoxious.”

Her American accent and attitude are back.

“Fine,” I sigh. “You have to do everything the hard way, don’t you?”

“Ha, you sound like the last dude I dated.”

Mia unexpectedly stands, leans over the table and gives me a kiss on the cheek. Right above the fresh scar on my face.

“If I didn’t say it before, thank you for tonight and the call you made on my behalf. I won’t ever forget it.”

I ignore the collective gasp in the bar as they watch the interaction between us. I think someone may have even snapped a picture. Mia has always been a touchy-feely kind of person. When the spirit moves her, she just has to act, and I definitely didn’t mind it.

“What did I tell you about thanking me?”

“It’s hard not to. You’re just so awesome.”

“Well, try harder.” I smirk.

“I bet you’d do anything to cheer me up tonight, wouldn’t you?”

This can’t be headed anywhere good.

“Mia–“

“This is probably the second crappiest day of my life. I need cheering up.”

“I thought that’s what I’ve been doing all night.”

“I need more. I’m greedy. I wantyouto sing.”

“No way.”

“It’s karaoke night.”

“Hell, no, Mia.”

Her persuasive smile (Mia has an arsenal of irresistible grins) spreads all the way to her doe brown, almond-shaped eyes.

“Please?”

I exhale with disapproval. I have zero interest in singing in public. She’s taking advantage of me because she knows I won’t tell her no. I never tell Mia no… not and truly mean it.

“Fuck, Mia. Fine. What song do you have in mind?”

“Yess!!!” She uses a fist cheer. “Tonight we’re both going to singBohemian Rhapsodytogether. I need you to do the low parts and I’ll take the high. The crowd in here will love it. We’ll get a standing ovation.”

“I don’t know that song.”
