“You have a spy in my camp?”

“I bargained with Caroline. I told her if she got me some intel on you, I’d allow her to use my photo along with my written testimonial.”

“So Dena sold me out.”

“Exactly.”

“This looks really good, though. I may have to thank her.”

“Let’s eat while it’s still hot. The steak is medium-rare just like you like it.”

That damn Dena is a hopeless romantic and a snitch.

Jason uses his very expensive-looking camera to take multiple shots of the skyline and a few of me too. Then we watch in awe and delight as the sun sets and the city lights grow brighter with each passing moment. The two of us alone with the East River and city traffic rushing underneath us is almost surreal. It’s the most romantic date I’ve ever been on.

“Are you warm enough, beautiful?”

“Yes, the heaters are great. How did you even get them on here?”

“I’m impressive, aren’t I?” He grins.

“You are.” I shake my head at his shameless ego.

“In all ways?” He raises his eyebrow suggestively.

“In every way.”

“This is our third and final date under the contract, Adrienne.”

“Uh-huh.”

“But after this I’m hoping we’ll begin a new contract.”

I grin from ear to ear in relief. I wasn’t sure what he was going to say.

“What do you have in mind?”

“If you don’t answer, you’re going to have to drink.”

He hands me a shot glass and tears flood my eyes.

There’s a shot of clear liquid with a huge princess cut diamond ring floating inside.

“Church wedding or elopement?”

Thirty-Nine

ADRIENNE

“You don’t haveto do this.”

“I want to do this.”

“Seriously, this is above and beyond the call of duty.”

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you’re trying to keep me hidden like I’m some sort of dirty little secret, Dr. Hodges.”

Jason pecks me lightly on lips then rubs down his morning wood.
