Me: Goodbye, Jason.
Jason: Dream of me tonight, beautiful.
I open my door to let the assistant in.
“Hi, I’m Adrienne.”
“And I’m sorry.”
I giggle.
“Can I get you something to drink or a snack before you get started? I’m not sure it’s fair that you have to do this. I would’ve said no if I didn’t actually believe he’d leave you outside my door all night.”
“Oh, he definitely would, so I thank you for kindlyacquiescing.”
“What’s it like working for a man like Jason?”
“An adventure every day.”
“Have you had to do things like this before?”
“Not for a woman.”
“Did he tell you to say that?” I ask, unconvinced.
“He pays me to work, but I do all of my own thinking for free.”
I giggle again.
“You’re funny, Bryan.”
“And you’re very much as he described.”
“What’s that?”
“Beautiful on the inside and out.”

ADRIENNE
When my motherand I plan a mother and daughter shopping excursion, we always make a day out of it. It always begins with breakfast at our favorite pancake house, then we shop for what could very well be hours and finally we end the afternoon with a musical (or some sort of other old movie) at home on the couch or we pull out the photo albums and look at old pictures of dad. It really depends upon her mood and how much time I have.
Today we’re shopping for Cecily’s wedding and we have several things on the list to purchase. The first thing I need is a pair of shoes to go with my bridesmaid’s dress and you guessed it, the dress is the color blush pink. I also need a flesh-colored pair of Spanx to hold in all of my jiggly parts, and finally I need to purchase a gift for the happy couple. I do not know what I’m going to get them, but mom assures me that there’s plenty to choose from her five wedding registries.
Talk about overkill.
“Right this way, ladies.”
After the hostess seats us, my mom pulls out a travel pack of wipes and wipes down the table.
“They’ve got people who do that you know?”
“Wipe our table with that dirty dish water they use? No, thank you.”
“Do you want to stop coming here if you’re concerned about the cleanliness of the place? Maybe find another breakfast spot? There are plenty in this city.”
“It’s the same no matter where we go, sweetie, so we might as well stay here where we can at least be guaranteed that the food is good.”
