“I hope you got that on camera.”

“Of course not. You know I always miss recording the best moments because I’m living them.”

“So true, Duchess.”

I lean over and initiate another kiss. This one is less rushed, but still full of passion. He gazes into my eyes with worship and longing, and I return the sentiment. For a moment, we almost forget that he’s holding Bronx between us when I finally release his mouth.

“Damn,” he comments.

That’s exactly it in a nutshell. Our kisses still feel like they did the first time. When life feels like it’s spinning out of control and the world is turning way too fast, a kiss from my husband is exactly what I need to stop, get off the rollercoaster and appreciate the view. Life is good, but life with Roman makes it spectacular.

Suddenly Knox runs into the room and grabs his father around the leg.

“Daddy!”

“Sorry guys, I didn’t mean to interrupt, but Knox heard his dad’s voice,” Mona says.

“Hey, little monster. Were you helping Mona pack for our big trip?” He rubs the top of Knox’s massive head of hair.

“Yes!” He nods his head. “I helped.”

“Awesome!”

“Is Seven still asleep, Mona?”

“Yes, I haven’t heard a peep from him.”

“Little dude needs his rest so his bones can grow,” Roman says. “He’s going to be the biggest one out of the three. I bet you.”

Roman hands Bronx over to Mona. He lifts up Knox and tosses him up way too high in the air for my liking several times and then puts him back on the floor.

“Knox, why don’t you and Bronx help Mona study. Mommy and I are going to finish our packing.” Roman winks at me.

There was a time where I would have resisted this, been almost embarrassed by it, but this man is my husband and I will never take his love or his wanting me for granted again. I’m not a terrible mom because I want a little midday lovin’ with my husband. What I am is a better wife and a happier human being.

Juliette tried to explain it to me when I wasn’t ready to receive it, but I realize now that nothing in this life is promised. There’s no guarantee that every time either of us leaves this house that we will both return. So living each day like it could be our last is the biggest gift of love we could ever give to our sons and to each other.

Mona heads off to study with Bronx in her arms and Knox skipping excitedly behind her. This time Mr. Tibbs stays right where he is underneath one of the kitchen chairs.

Roman holds out his massive hand towards me and I place mine inside of it.

“Shall we go finish packing?”

“Yes, I think we better.”

He surprises me with a sudden whack on my butt.

“Then let’s get going, Mrs. Masterson. I’m taking you on a long ride tonight and we don’t make a stop until I fucking say so.”

“Yes, Masterson.”
