Remy refrained from pointing out that Jeremiah had known her less than six weeks.
“I told her that whatever we had is done,” he continued, “and that you’re the one I’m into.”
“What?” she squawked. Her motion ceased, except for her scrambling heartbeat. “Why did you say that? We’re not a couple!”
“But youarethe one I’m into.”
“Jeremiah 1.0 is going to be so angry at you for pushing Gigi away when you get your memories back!”
“Jeremiah 1.0 is not my main concern. You’re my main concern.”
She blocked the swoony melting that wanted to happen inside her chest. “Duke,” she said sternly, “recovering your memories should be your main concern right now. Your past is not going to stay in the past. It will keep finding you and it will demand to be reckoned with.”
“Are you mad at me?”
“No.”
“You sound mad.”
She’d meant what she’d said earlier. Gigi’s appearance was not his fault. It’s just that she wassoweary of his past loves! Alexis and now Gigi. Who knew how many more girlfriends might come out of the woodwork? It was too much. Overwhelming.
“Are we good?” he asked. “You and me?”
“Yes.”
“When can I see you again?”
“I’m not sure.” If she told him now that she was leaving, he’d mount a defense against that and she didn’t have the energy to battle a will as strong as his. “Tonight I’m going to stay here and rest.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”
“Good night.” She added warmth to her tone to mask the fact that she had not agreed that she would see him tomorrow.
An hour later, Jeremiah was brooding over Remy when a text came in from his mother.
Fiona
Darling, my family (the O’Sullivans) is getting together for lunch tomorrow. Is it too much to ask for you to drive over to Jefferson with me and eat with us? Everyone would love to see you.
He ran a search to see how long it would take him to drive to Jefferson. No way was he accidentally getting roped into a whole day of driving with Fiona.
Eyeballing the GPS map, he texted Remy.
Jeremiah
My mom invited us to the town of Jefferson for lunch with her family tomorrow. It’s about a thirty-minute drive. Are you up for that?
No answer so he sat in his media room and tried to distract himself with college football.
A text from her came in twenty minutes later.
Remy
No, thanks. I wouldn’t want to butt in on a family lunch. However, it’s wonderful that you and your mother have plans. I’m sure that will make her happy.
Jeremiah
I couldn’t care less about going. If you’re not up for it, then that gives me a reason to say no.
