Crane yawns beside me, and my heart sinks even lower.

“I’m sorry,” I say for the millionth time as Crane sighs.

“Don’t keep apologising, it’s not your fault Hale is a prick.”

But it is.

Why did I date such an asshole?

But then, he wasn’t always an asshole.

“I feel bad for your mom.”

Crane smirks, and I swear my stomach flips.

“My mom seems quite content with Ray, wouldn’t you agree?”

I thought Crane took the news quite well, considering everything.

Or maybe he was too distracted by my crap to care.

My foot jiggles with nerves, and try as I might I can’t stop it.

I want to call my parents and get the best lawyer we can afford by combining our money together, but Crane insists he’s got this.

I realise I don’t know much about Crane now, not who he has been for the past five years, anyway.

Do I care?

Not really.

“Crane?”

“Yeah?” he drawls, switching lanes as he flies down the highway.

“I love you.”

Crane smiles, lifting my hand to his lips, kissing it softly.

“You know, once I’ve kicked Hale’s ass, I’m going to buy you the biggest rock, so the whole world knows you’re mine.”

My heart slams in my chest at his words, and I lean over to kiss his cheek, wrapping my arms around him as I do.

“I don’t want any more diamonds, Michaels.”

Crane chuckles, his body relaxing beneath me.

“No? What do you want then? Emeralds? Rubies?”

I shake my head forcefully.

“A tattoo,” I whisper, as he whistles.

“A tattoo, huh?”

I nod, proud of my suggestion.

“Yep. Tattoo the ring on my finger because that way I’ll never lose it.”
