“I like your brother. He’s great.”

“Yeah, he is. And contrary to what he said, I’m not the best dancer. Mom and Dad… well, now my mom is.” He shoved his hands in his pockets so he wouldn’t reach for her. They should step outside but it was nice here in the cozy barn, even if they’d never make love in it.

“Monty’s just proud of you. That’s sweet.”

“Are you okay dancing with me?”

“After that buildup I can’t wait.”

“I might be rusty. Haven’t gone dancing lately.”

“That makes two of us.”

He gazed at her. The physical ache would soon force him to suggest they leave this barn before temptation got the better of him. “Sounds like you don’t get out much.” He shouldn’t be happy about that, but he was.

She gave a little shrug. “I’m kinda particular about who I spend time with.”

He couldn’t help smiling. “That makes two of us.” Peas in a pod. On the same wavelength. Maybe even soul mates.

He couldn’t shake the idea that Fate had brought them back together for a reason. But were they meant for each other? Or were they supposed to learn how to let go?

Chapter Fourteen

One more second alone in this barn and Jordan would launch herself at Luis, camera or no camera. “Hey, you wanted a look inside my trailer. Let’s do that while we wait for Monty.”

“Good idea.”

She turned toward her sleeping horse. “Keep up the good work, Fudge. I’ll be back to check on you later.” She walked out of the stall.

Luis followed her and latched the door.

“Should we close those doors?” She glanced back as they left the barn.

“It’ll stay cooler if we don’t. Fudge is safe. The electric fence keeps the wild horses in and predators out.”

“I hadn’t thought of that. If he had to get a hoof abscess, I’m glad it was now, when he has the perfect place to start the healing process.” She headed toward the side of the barn where she’d parked the truck and trailer.

“It worked out well.” He fell into step beside her. “You sure picked the right name for that horse. His coat looks exactly like fudge, especially in the sun.”

“But that’s not where the name came from.”

“No?”

“First I wanted to name him after my brother Cole but I was going to spell it C-o-a-l.”

“That’s not bad, either.”

“He thought it would be confusing, so we drove to the stable on a naming mission. At the time he was working to break his F-bomb habit. We were in the stall tossing around ideas while we groomed my unnamed horse when he stomped on Cole’s foot. He yelled out fu…dge. Mission complete.”

“That’s funny.”

“Especially since these days he totally uses it to replace his favorite swear word. Once he came out with How the fudge is Fudge?”

Luis chuckled. “On purpose?”

“Oh, no. But it is now. It’s a thing.” She pulled down the steps before unlocking and opening the door to her living quarters. “Go on in. I’ll watch for Monty.” Coming back down the steps, she positioned herself so she could see Adam’s truck parked in front of the barn.

“Thanks.” He took off his hat and ducked through the door. “Smells nice in here.”
