“Damn, self-centered much?” I said, as she rubbed at her belly, it was beginning to poke out a little bit.
“I’m a mother of three now,” she rolled her eyes.
“Whatever!”
I heard a horn honk outside.
“That’s my ride!” I dropped a kiss on my mom’s cheek.
“Are you coming home tonight?” My mom asked.
I was here on a mini vacation. Paul and Chyna had decided to renew their vows and had begged me to be in attendance.
“Don’t wait up!”
I was already out the door, my cute tan wedges going along with my pale pink dress and jean jacket outfit. My curls were bouncing wild and free and I opened the door to the rental car and peered in at my official boyfriend.
“Hey,” Kelton smiled over at me.
“Hey yourself!”
Our mouth’s collided and the smell of spearmint mouthwash surrounded me.
“I should go in and say hi to your folk…”
Rolling my eyes, I closed the car door quickly. “Step on it….my dad already wants box seats with the president.”
“Really?”
I gave him a look. “Hell yeah, he wants tickets.”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
Settling back into the seat for our drive that was going to be nearly forty five minutes away at some garden that Chyna had set up, we passed by my old stomping grounds. The Crescentin daylight was a different view. I’d busted my ass there as a bartender and made some amazing friendships. In fact, I was having dinner with Sage and her husband the very next night. I couldn’t wait to squeeze her. She hadn’t been able to make it out to California just yet but I had a spare bedroom waiting.
“We’re going to wrong way,” I finally took notice.
“What?”
“We’re going…”
Sitting up as Kelton maneuvered the car into the empty parking lot of East Cannon High School. The sun was already starting to make a hazy halo as it started to its descent to bring on tonight’s full moon.
“What?” Kelton shrugged getting out.
I stayed inside until he opened my door.
“What are you doing?”
Before he could stop himself, he was down on one knee. My hand went to my mouth and I wanted to run away. Butterflies danced inside of my stomach threatening to overtake every single nerve within my body.
“Stop,” tears were in my eyes quickly causing a stinging sensation.
Kelton simply looked up. “Now Sassy, don’t go crying on me. My heart wouldn’t be able to take it.”
My breath hitched in of my throat as he pulled out a ring. In the center was an opal that looked as if a sunset and a lightning storm was hatching inside of it. The ring seemed to mirror both of us inside of its secret surface.
“When I went looking for a ring, I knew it had to be something different. A diamond wouldn’t do for one of the most unique…stunningly beautiful ….yet sassiest women in the great state of Texas.”
